When I had time to upgrade Ubuntu from 7.04 to 7.10, I used Tsinghua's source to download it quickly, but it took a long time to install it. It took about 50 minutes in total. Alas, my machine is old. The new Ubuntu version is named gutsy, And the File Manager is changed from the original Konqueror to a more useful Dolphin. However, the desktop is still unchanged. After a happy introduction, I decided to get a 3D desktop to play with and give my desktop a better look.
I have heard of vista's 3D desktop before, but the hardware requirements are high, so my machine can't stand it. However, the hardware requirements for Linux 3D desktops are much lower than those for vista. My machine memory is 512 M, and the nvidia GeForce4 graphics card, but the Ubuntu 3D desktop is still quite smooth, there is no sense of a card at all. However, the installation and configuration of the 3D desktop are really difficult. It took two days to complete the configuration. Now it is quite stable. The following shows my results.
Here, we use Ubuntu's 3D desktop software Compiz Fusion, which can be downloaded directly from the gutsy source. My Ubuntu Desktop Environment is kde. The command for installing Compiz Fusion is as follows:
Sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-kde compiz-fusion -*
After compiz is installed, install the Theme Management Software emerald:
Sudo apt-get install emerald
After installation, run compiz with the compiz-replace command, but the window does not have a title bar and cannot be dragged, just like the crash. So you can select the window decoration in Advanced Desktop Effects Settings. After finding a lot of methods, I finally found a useful post for me. Enter:
Sudo nvidia-xconfig -- add-argb-glx-als-d 24
Sudo nvidia-xconfig -- add-argb-glx-metrics ALS-composite
Run "desktop-effects" and restart "X". The title bar is displayed. In "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings", select the window to move the window. Remind me that this is the nvidia series graphics card settings. For other graphics cards, please find relevant information. Then, in Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, set the horizontal virtual size in DestopSize to 4, enable cube cap, and set the cube effect accordingly. Finally, I installed a Very dazzling theme that Huan gave me, and the entire installation and setup process was completed. To enable and disable compiz, you can install fusion-icon, so that you do not need to manually enter compiz-replace to start compiz. You can easily start and close compiz with just one mouse.
