This can be used as a file to install Ubuntu in Windows, and then a Dual Boot is created: You can run this operating system on your computer as if the system is fully installed on your machine, it does not affect existing Windows Installation programs. The final version 8.04 can run any common Virtual Machine Software Package well.

Our initial impression of 8.04 is that he has made a lot of improvements to the overall sense of the system. Screen Control is greatly improved-the screen and keyboard are not completely removed from tedious control through xorg. conf configuration files, but it provides more effective display resolution and refresh frequency programs. Similarly, the Compiz wobbly window/3D interface is fully integrated and enabled, although at a limited level.

We did find that the collaboration between our resolution change program and Compiz on our graphic hardware (Intel82865G chipset) is not complete. If we have higher usage requirements for Compiz and increase the resolution from 800*600 to 1280*1024, the Active Screen still maintains a 800*600 resolution, which is in the upper left corner of the screen. This problem can be easily corrected by disabling and re-enabling Compiz resolution updates, but it indicates that some work still needs to be done in the system.

As before, Ubuntu has a complete set of applications: openoffice.org 2.4.0, GIMP image editor (2.4.5) and hybrid multimedia player (new release version: F-Spot ), vinagre (multi-process VNC Viewer) and Brasero (CD/DVD recorder), a pretty multi-time zone clock (although it thinks that the world's only barsarona is in Venezuela ), there is also a security policy manager. Of course, if you are not satisfied with any of the above software, you can add any or all of the 24865 software packages listed in the Synoptics Application Manager for free.

One controversial update is that the 8.04 release contains Firefox 3 beta 5. According to the standard beta version and the release version is close enough, having Firefox 3 (FF 3) and the new operating system itself is more meaningful from the very beginning than the important updates. Although FF 3 is largely popular, it seems to be more stable, faster, and consumes less memory than earlier versions, it is still not fully ready. For example, we found that webpage printing is obviously slow, and there are still a lot of Firefox extensions that are not ready yet-including the indispensable foxmarks bookmarks and syntaxes. Any network that is expected to be built for enterprises using Ubuntu 8.04 will be waiting for FF3 to be completely stable.

Other improvement measures seem to be slight, but they are quite different. Many system utilities are cleaned up and provide more clean and functional interfaces. At the same time, the document viewer is faster and can better process PDF files. 8.04 adopts both Linux kernel 2.6.24-12.23 and GNOME 2.22 (the latter reflects many user interface improvements). In general, the system is more robust, responsive, and available. This may be the first release of Linux to make it available to older users.

Unfortunately, this is not the case if your grandmother expects the system to connect to a Windows/SMB/CIFS share. After the update, we found that we could not connect 8.04 to our enterprise server. This problem did not occur in versions 7.10 and earlier. After research, it was found that this was caused by a known and fixed error associated with the Active Directory of GNOME 2.22's new virtual archive system. It cannot establish authentication in various environments. Since this error is very prominent, hard Heron cannot be recommended for enterprise-level use.

In addition to this obvious, it should not be missed out on unexpected system defects. The hard Heron is a great operating system worth upgrading. If you do not need to rely on Windows sharing, using 8.04 should be an easy decision, or you can take this opportunity to try Ubuntu for the first time. However, you still need to be cautious about any key tasks: it is best to wait until it is officially released and undergo more tests in reality.
