I always think that Ubuntu Server is a little unsatisfactory. Compared with RHEL5, there is no graphical interface. below is the process from the terminal console to the graphical interface.

The following test is completed on Ubuntu server 10.04.

1. to connect to the network, make sure that the network is smooth. If you use Wireless like me, first find the root network cable, because the following installation must download components through the network.

2. The command for accessing the graphic interface is startX. After hitting it, a prompt is displayed for installing xinit.

Sudo apt-get install xinit

After installation, the terminal is changed from black to white. The X-type mouse pointer appears.

3. Install the Environment Manager

If you like GNOME, use sudo apt-get install TPD

KDE and Xface users are changed to KDM and XDM respectively.

I first installed kde, and then installed GNOME on the kde terminal. The two can also be well integrated.

4. Install the desktop environment

Sudo apt-get install Ubuntu-desktop or kubuntu-desktop xubuntu-desktop

If you only want to install the core environment of the interface or compare the network speed, you can

Sudo apt-get install gnome-core or kde-core xface4

5. If you have installed CORE, you still need to do the following work: www.linuxidc.com

1. Install the New Software Package Manager

Sudo apt-get install gsynaptic

2. Install the wireless Internet access module (if needed)

Sudo apt-get install network-manager *

3. Install Chinese support (Chinese can be displayed)

Sudo apt-get install language-support-zh

4. Select Chinese Input Method support and Chinese interface support from the new software package manager

5. Use the new software package manager to install other software you want
