Unable to run 16-bit Application

Specifies whether to prevent the MS-DOS subsystem (ntvdm.exe) from running on this computer ). This setting affects the startup of 16-bit applications in the operating system. By default, all users are allowed to run MS-DOS subsystems on this computer.

You can use this setting to shut down the MS-DOS subsystem, which reduces resource usage and prevents users from running 16-bit applications. To run any 16-bit application or any application with 16-bit components, ntvdm.exe must be allowed. The MS-DOS subsystem is started when the first 16-bit application is started. While running the MS-DOS subsystem, any subsequent 16-bit application will start faster, but the overall resource usage on the system will increase.

If you set the status to enabled, ntvdm.exe is blocked, and any 16-bit application is blocked. In addition, any 32-bit application with a 16-bit installer or other 16-bit components cannot run.

If the State is set to disabled, the application defaults and allows all users to run MS-DOS subsystems on this computer.

If the status is set to not configured, the application is set by default and allows all users to run ntvdm.exe. However, if the administrator sets the registry DWORD Value HKLM \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ WOW \ DisallowedPolicyDefault to 1, the default setting is changed to prevent all 16-bit applications from running.

Note: This setting is included in Computer Configuration and user configuration. If this setting is configured at the same time, the setting in Computer Configuration replaces the setting in user configuration.

 

To run a 16-bit application, set the following parameters:

If you cannot run a 16-bit program on Windows, you can run gpedit. msc, open the Group Policy, expand in sequence: Local Computer Policy → user configuration → manage template → Windows Components → application compatibility, on the right side, you can see "preventing access to the 16-bit application". It is very likely that this is already set to "enabled ", you should change to disabled to run a 16-bit Windows program.
