Symptom (s): When you use Windows Easy Transfer to restore data from across partitions in Windows 7, you receive the following error message:
When Windows Easy Transfer cannot open the file.
Reason: This problem occurs when a spanned volume's migration store file is not in the same location or the migration store for the spanned volume is corrupted.
Solution
Method One: Verify the location of the migrated storage files
1, click the Start button, and then click "Computer" to open the Explorer
2, in the upper right corner, type *.mig in the search box, and press ENTER.
3. Please note the location of all files with *.mig extensions such as *.mig, *.MIG01, etc.
4, make sure that all files with the *.mig extension are in the same folder.
If they are not in the same folder, follow these steps:
1 Select a folder in the migration store.
2 Select all *.mig files listed in the Search Results window, and are not selected in the Migrate folder in step 4.
3 On the Edit menu, click Copy.
4 Open the folder, you select in step 4 and on the Edit menu, click Paste.
Please try running Windows Easy Transfer again.
If the method does not solve the problem, try Method two
Method Two: Copy the migrated storage files to another location
1. Right-click an empty area on the desktop, point to New, and then click Folder.
2, Migrate temp, this folder is named, and then press the "Enter" key.
3, click the Start button, and then click Computer, open Explorer click.
4, in the upper-right corner, search the Computer box type *.mig, and then press the "ENTER" key.
5. Please note the location of all files with *.mig extensions such as *.mig, *.MIG01, etc.
6, select the *.mig extension and all files listed in the Search Results window.
7, on the Edit menu, click Copy.
8, open the Migrate Temp folder, and then on the Edit menu, click Paste.
9. Run Windows Easy Transfer and point to the location of the Migration Temp folder when you transfer files and settings to your computer.
If method two does not solve the problem, try the method three
Method Three: Check hard drive errors
Use the Chkdsk tool to check for disk problems. To do this, follow these steps:
1, click the Start button, and then click "Computer" to open the Explorer
2. Right-click the drive that contains the migrated file, and then click Properties.
3, click on the Tools tab to check immediately in the error-checking area.
4, click to select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click to select the scan and try to recover bad sectors check box.
5, click "Start".
6. If you receive the following message: Windows cannot check the disk, it is in use. Do you want to schedule disk checking the next time you restart your computer? , click Schedule Disk Check, and then restart the computer:
Note: It may take several minutes for the disk to be checked against your hard disk. For best results, do not use the computer to perform any other tasks during the disk check process.
