Upgrade GNOME to 14.04 in Ubuntu 3.12

Source: Internet
Author: User

If your system has recently been upgraded to Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS, stable and independent GNOME Shell is undoubtedly your best choice.

However, I think conservative users tend to choose the stable version provided by default to new users. Do you really want to know how to upgrade GNOME to 3.12 In Ubuntu14.04?

Okay. Next I will introduce how to complete it. First, we need to understand the ins and outs.

The reason why GNOME 3.10 is used by default

After the release of GNOME 3.12 at the end of March, it triggered a sensation and a storm of comments. Although the version released last month has gradually stabilized before the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version, it still cannot be directly installed from the 14.04 package. Why?

Simply put, it appears too late during the development cycle so that there is not enough time to review, test, and ensure it has been updated to the standards and user expectations supported by the LTS command release. By default, it makes sense to release 3.10 of the old version because there is a dedicated plan to ensure the test is complete.

Therefore, it is not recommended to upgrade GNOME to 3.12.

Is that clear? Next, let's go to the next stage.

How to upgrade GNOME to 14.04 in Ubuntu 3.12 to ensure that the running GNOME version is 3.10

To ensure that the Wizard is correctly followed, continue with the latest Ubuntu (14.04 LTS) or Ubuntu GNOME version. If not, stop the upgrade. If you do not do this, there will be a series of complicated and troublesome things to solve.

If you are running a standard Ubuntu version (such as with Unity), you need to install GNOME 3.10 from the Ubuntu Software Center before starting the following steps.

Follow the link options below to prepare the installer.

Added GNOME 3.12 PPA

At first, it was expected that GNOME 3.12 would be released by the standard GNOME Team PPA with 14.04 LTS. But three weeks have passed, but nothing has been done. This is because some small 3.10 packages are still not followed by the latest 3.12 packages.

However, the GNOME Team Staging PPA does cover various version 3.12 packages used for upgrade. The developer stressed that adding this archive will make the desktop system run smoothly, but the package currently contained is not 'Ready for use by the masses '.

Assume that you are an expert in PPA cleanup tools and everything above is clear. Please proceed to the next step. First, let's check and install the released updates:

  1. Sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Press the Enter key and wait for the installation package program.

Once this process is completed or no pending updates are available, you can add the GNOME Team Staging PPA. To implement this operation, open a new command line window and enter the following command:

  1. Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
  2. Sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Before the upgrade starts, you must enter the password and note the command line prompts during the upgrade. Click 'y' to confirm the installation.

Additional content

To experience the real GNOME environment, you may want to obtain some new GNOME applications, such as the Polari IRC client, GNOME map, and GNOME web browser. To install these three applications, run the following command:

sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser gnome-maps polari -y

After the installation is complete, you can restart it safely!

Aftercare Login

If you have previously used Unity, Xfce, or other desktop environments, do not forget to select a GNOME session from the logon interface before logging on.

Review

For myself, running GNOME 14.04 in Ubuntu 3.12 is quite smooth. There were no issues after the upgrade, such as performance degradation, even though I did see a strange and rare display of failures when opening the activity window and intermittent shadow disappears under an application. But with the continuous elimination of errors, these are not big issues.

The performance of version 3.12 is equivalent to that of GNOME3.10. The open method of the application is highly interactive and the user experience is not significantly reduced.

All new GNOME audio and video applications do not have ready-made packages on PPA, which is a bit disappointing. Of course, there is a reason to explain this (it is likely that a new version of the video decoder is required ). Note that some GNOME extension packages cannot continue to work after upgrade.

Of course, 3.12 errors are inevitable due to insufficient tests. If you require stability (or want to maintain a high degree of uniformity and integrity during system operation), you can continue to support GNOME 3.10 that has passed the test.

But if you want to experience the shiny new features and the latest GNOME application, try the PPA platform. If an error occurs, you can use the PPA cleanup tool to downgrade to a stable version at any time.

sudo apt-get install ppa-purgesudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
