Upgrade from Vsphere 5.5 to 6 of 1-Case description

Whether it is the operating system or the application software, the version is always updated, the new system and software, will provide more features, and some will discard some outdated content to adapt to the current form. Therefore, in our current environment, there is a term "upgrade", which includes hardware (such as servers, storage, switches, networks), and also includes software (operating system, application) upgrade.

For hardware upgrades, virtualization hosts and storage updates are relatively straightforward after vsphere virtualization: In the current vsphere data center, add new storage and hosts, use Vmotion, and run virtual machines, from older, less-performing storage, to Migrate to the newly added storage, or use Vmotion to migrate the running virtual machine from the ready-to-retire ESXi host to the newly added ESXi host. After the migration is complete, remove unused storage and hosts from the existing Vsphere data center, completing the upgrade of the server hardware and storage.

In contrast to software upgrades, the virtualization host ESXi and the Virtualization Management Center Vcenter Server upgrade are included. This section describes the upgrade of vsphere through a specific case.

9.1 Overview of a small vsphere data center

A small data center consisting of 3 IBM 3650 M4, 1 IBM 3700 storage, three servers with VMware ESXi 5.5 installed and managed by Vcenter Server 5.5. VMware View 6.0 virtual desktops, VMware vCenter Operations Manager 5.8.1 are deployed in this data center. The entire topology is shown in 1-10.

The main process for upgrading:

(1) Back up vcenter Server. Use VDP to back up important virtual machines.

(2) Upgrade vcenter Server 5.5 to vcenter Server 6.0.

(3) In order to ensure that the business is uninterrupted, upgrade each host in turn. Suppose you first upgrade a, and then you upgrade B and C. When upgrading a, place a in maintenance mode, heat migrate hosts on A to B, C, and then upgrade a. After upgrade A is successful (completed), A is canceled for maintenance mode. Then upgrade B, and finally upgrade C.

We will cover each step in detail below.

9.2 Backing up vcenter server and checking the current host

Before upgrading, the main task is to back up important virtual machines and modify the necessary configuration.

(1) Back up your important virtual machines, and if you have VDP, use VDP to back up all your important virtual machines one day in advance. For Vcenter Server 5.5 itself, you can use the vsphere client or vsphere Web client, using your own payroll, to clone a new copy of the Vcenter Server 5.5 virtual machine, as shown in example 1-11, The figure named "vcenter_5.5 (Bak)-16.20" is a clone from "vCenter-16.20" and the original VCenter server is installed in a virtual machine named "vCenter-16.20". We clone a complete copy to avoid the impact that the Vcenter server cannot start due to an upgrade failure, in fact, upgrading from Vcenter Server 5.5 to 6.0 is more secure and reliable, but to avoid problems, it is better to back up.

(2) If you are currently in a "clustered" environment, there are ESXI hosts in the cluster that are in standby or hibernate, turn on the host power Supply (1-12), and modify the cluster configuration (1-13), temporarily disabling the Power management feature, as shown in 1-14.
