Use boot camp in iMac to install WINXP with multiple partitions

Covet Mac OS X's bright interface and UNIX-based stable operating system, a new iMac (mb952ch/A) was purchased, ending the embarrassing time of running snow leopard on virtual machines. During use, another embarrassing problem was found: online watching movies and downloading. In Windows, both of these tasks are favored by thunder, while windows and IE seem to be the favorite of thunder technicians. As a result, I had the motivation to install another Windows System in iMac.

The first choice is to install Windows 7, but after upgrading Mac OS X online, the Boot Camp version is 3.0.2, which cannot meet the requirement that the Boot Camp version is 3.1 at the lowest. After some Google attacks, we couldn't find version 3.1. We had to put it aside and install WINXP.

The boot camp has a severe restriction. You can only split a new partition on a single partition to install windows. By default, only two partitions can be created, which obviously cannot meet the requirements in most cases.

After countless experiments, we finally successfully installed WINXP with multiple partitions. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Back up data on Mac OS X.
  2. If more than one partition already exists, run the disk tool in Mac OS X to overwrite the excess partition and retain only one default partition, the partition occupies the space of the entire hard disk of the worker. Disable the disk tool.
  3. Run boot camp and draw a partition with the mouse. This partition is only used in Mac OS X.
  4. After Partitioning Using boot camp, boot camp will prompt us to install windows. HoweverDo not installDo not close the boot camp and put it aside.
  5. Run the disk tool again. As you can see, the hard disk has been divided into two partitions, the first is the partition where Mac OS X is located, the second is the partition created by boot camp, and the volume is marked as "bootcamp ".
  6. Use the disk tool to add the desired partition. The disk tool will add these partitions after the partition where Mac OS X is located, but before the bootcamp partition. In this example, I have created five partitions. The most important thing is 2nd and 3rd partitions. These two partitions will be directly used by WINXP. Set the format of the two partitions to MS-DOS (fat ).
  7. Change the volume of the 3rd partitions to the same name as the last partition created by Boot Camp: bootcamp. This step is critical to defrauding boot camp. For the first partition, I name it "Win data" and use it as the Data Partition under WINXP.
  8. After checking the format and size of each partition, click the "application" button of the disk tool to start partitioning.
  9. Insert the WINXP system installation disk, return to boot camp, and click "Start installation". Mac OS X restarts and is installed under DOS.
  10. During WINXP installation, select 3rd partitions, that is, the partition marked as "bootcamp" (with the drive letter C in front), format it as NTFS, and install WINXP on the partition. Note: if it is not formatted as NTFS, you may encounter a "disk error" and cannot start WINXP.
  11. After the installation is complete, the system will automatically enter WINXP, insert the random built-in "Mac OS X install DVD", and automatically Install Boot Camp and all its hardware drivers on WINXP.
  12. After WINXP is restarted, there is no sound in WINXP. This is because iMac has two sound card drivers installed in WINXP. Go to the control panel and change the audio card driver to cirrus.

After the Boot Camp is installed, the supervisor will have a boot camp icon after WINXP. Click it to restart and enter Mac OS X. Similarly, in Mac OS X, go to "system preference settings" and click "Start disk" to enable or restart the disc to enter WINXP. When the computer restarts, press and hold the "option" key on the keyboard that comes with the iMac machine to start the system. If you cannot enter WINXP upon restart, You can first turn off iMac, press the mouse, and then turn on the iMac power. iMac will automatically pop up the disc and start the Mac OS X system directly.

Theoretically, four boot partitions can be set for the primary boot partition, but in the above example, the author sets 3rd partitions as WINXP when purchasing a new machine based on the experience learned in the store.

Now, after the above steps, we have successfully installed WINXP that supports multiple partitions on iMac. In WINXP, you can see the system partition of Mac OS X and the partition named "Win data" above. Because the partition format of "Win data" is fat, the partition can be read and written by Mac OS X and WINXP at the same time. It is recommended that the partition be written by WINXP and read-only by Mac OS X to avoid accidental data destruction.

In this way, we can not only enjoy the beautiful world of apple on iMac, but also enjoy the fast speed service of thunder on WINXP.
