Article title: use FireStarter to Achieve Internet sharing. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
Preface
FireStarter is a firewall configuration tool based on GTK + and independent from iptables.
FireStarter is less powerful and flexible than iptables and squid, but it is intuitive, simple, and easy to use for the configuration of small-sized Lan and home shared internet access. For New Linux users and users who focus on desktop applications, FireStarter is undoubtedly a boon to them.

1. set Internet sharing methods
1. use the "run Wizard"
Click firewall/run wizard on the main interface of FireStarter to go to the running Wizard interface of FireStarter. If you are using FireStarter in the Fedora Core release software repository, you don't have to worry about language barriers, because the key information text has been translated well and is easy to understand.
Follow the instructions in the Wizard and click forward ".
The first step is to select a network device connected to the Internet. Generally, the network device automatically detected by the software will not be wrong. However, these network devices must at least have activated network connections (such as eth0 and eth1.
The second step is to select the interface device connected to the internal LAN. Generally, you can trust the automatic detection function of the software. There is a special option to set whether to Enable Internet sharing, that is, "Enable Internet connection sharing ", if you want other computers in the Lan to share the Internet connection to this host, check this option.
Step 3: select whether to enable the firewall immediately. This option is usually checked.
Click "save". everything is ready.
2. use "preferences"
Like other Linux software, FireStarter also has a "preferences" that allow users to configure the software at any time. You can select the firewall/network configuration from the fold menu on the left, and then complete it step by step in the configuration interface on the right.
In fact, this interface contains three steps in the running wizard. you can select the network device connected to the Internet (Internet connected network device) here) and the Local network connection device connected to the internal LAN ).
Then, check the Enable Internet connection sharing option.
Click "accept" in the lower right corner of the configuration window to complete the configuration. Is it easy? Pai_^
2. how to access the Internet
This host uses FireStarter to implement "network address translation (NAT)". Therefore, for other computers connected to the Internet through this host in the internal LAN, just as they connect directly to the Internet, they do not need to set proxy servers. this is different from using specific proxy software (such as SyGate and WinGate.
Note: More importantly, all these computers accessing the Internet are protected by the FireStarter firewall.
III. Automatic running and system tray icons at startup
In the Interface menu of "preferences", check the first two options:
- Enable tray icon
- Minimize to tray on window close (Minimize to system tray when the window is closed)
In the firewall menu of "preferences", check the options below:
- Start/restart firewall on program startup (FireStarter runs at startup)
- Start/restart firewall on dial-out (if you are using a dial-up network, enable this item)
- Start/restart firewall on DHCP lease renewal (automatically run when an IP address is obtained from DHCP)
Click "accept" in the lower right corner of the configuration window.
4. more configuration functions
Indeed, the FIreStarter interface is very intuitive. You can easily understand and use various features.
You can see the "status", "event", and "policy" tabs on the main interface. Click to view the current running status of FireStarter firewall and event logs filtered for connection (you can clear or save these logs at any time) add or delete custom firewall rules at any time in the policy to implement more complex and diverse access and filter settings.
