Use Hugin to generate a panoramic photo in Linux

If you are an avid photographer, your photography set may have some amazing Panoramic photos. In fact, you do not need professional photography technology or special devices to make these photos. You can use photo merging software (online or offline, desktop devices, or mobile devices) you can easily combine two or more overlapping photos into a panoramic image.

In this tutorial, I will explain how to merge Panoramic photos in Linux. Here, I will use a photo merging software called Hugin.

Install Hugin in Ubuntu 8.10

Hugin is an open-source (GPLv2) Photo merging tool that can be used for free. It currently supports multiple platforms, including Linux, Windows, OS X, and FreeBSD. As an open-source software, Hugin is no inferior to commercial software in terms of functionality and quality. On the contrary, Hugin is very powerful and can be used not only to create 360-degree Panoramic photos, but also to support a variety of advanced lighting correction and optimization.

Install Hugin in Linux

Install Hugin In Debian, Ubuntu, or Linux Mint:

$ sudo apt-get install hugin

Install Hugin in Fedora:

$ sudo yum install hugin

Start Hugin

Run the command to start Hugin.

$ hugin

Here (the Assistant page), the first thing we need to do is import the photos we want to merge. Click the Load images button first, and then import (two or more images. Of course, these photos should have overlapping parts (three images are loaded here ).

After importing the photo, click Align to start the first merge.

To merge photos correctly, Hugin starts the merge assistant in a separate window to analyze the key points (Control Points) between photos ). After the analysis is complete, a preview of a panoramic photo is displayed in front of you.

Next, let's switch back to the main window of Hugin. At the bottom of the Align Button, you will see the photo merging status (such as the number of control points and error details ). Of course, there will also be notifications about the merger quality.

If the merge prompt shows "bad" or "really bad", you can continue to adjust the order as follows.
