Use the esxcli command to upgrade the host

After esxi is installed, some problems may occur, such as bugs found and new hardware is not supported. VMWare occasionally releases upgrade patches, there are currently two types of upgrade packages:

1, occasionally provided patch package, patch package name such as "ESXi550-201410001".

2,The cumulative patch, such as"Update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update02".

To upgrade esxi through esxcli commands, you need to understand VIB, image configuration files, and software libraries.

The following technical terms are used throughout the vsphere documentation to discuss installation and upgrade tasks.

ViB	VIB is an esxi software package. Includes VMware and its partner package solutions, drivers, CIM providers, and applications that extend the esxi platform to vib. VIB is available in the software library. You can use VIb to create and customize ISO images or install VIB asynchronously on the esxi host to upgrade the host.
Image configuration file	The image configuration file defines the esxi image and contains VIB. The image configuration file always contains one basic VIB and may contain multiple Vibs. You can use image builder powercli to check and define the image configuration file.
Software library	The software library is a collection of VIB and image configuration files. The software library is a hierarchical structure of files and folders. It can be obtained through http url (online library) or ZIP file (offline library. VMware and its partners provide software libraries. Companies that install large VMware can create internal libraries to prepare vsphere auto deploy for esxi hosts or export ISO for esxi installation.

Pay attention to the following points for upgrade:

1. Some upgrades require the host to be in maintenance mode.

2. If the host belongs to a VMware HA cluster, remove the host from the cluster or disable Ha on the cluster before installation or update.

3. the SSH service must be enabled for esxi.

3. Upload the patch package to the host through winscp. After selecting the storage path on the host, upload the file. Of course, you can also upload the file through the vsphere client, as shown in figure 3.
