Use the Vista disk management function to ensure data partitions are not lost.

Some friends have received a computer preinstalled with the Vista operating system and made almost all the hard disk space into a C: disk. Because traditional partition tools such as the partition magician cannot be used normally under Vista, the operating system has to be reinstalled for partitioning. In fact, the disk management function provided by VISTA can be used to partition without reinstalling the operating system to a certain extent. Here is an example.

In this example, we will see how to use the Vista disk management function to hide the pre-installed Dell re (d :) partition, release the OS (C :) space, and create two new partitions from the released space. To enable the final three hard disk partitions to use sequential drive letters C, D, and E, the example also describes how to modify drive letters in disk management.

I. Start disk management

1. In the Start menu, right-click-computer, and click-manage in the pop-up menu.

If the User Account Control Window appears, click-continue.

2. on the left side of the Open Computer Management window, left-click to select disk management.

2. Hide the Dell pre-installed recovery (d :) partition in Vista (optional)

● Skip this section if you do not need to hide the Dell reserved recovery (d :) partition in the Vista system.

● Tips: what is the use of the recovery partition reserved by Dell?

A rediscovery partition is reserved for Dell Computers preinstalled with the Vista operating system, and a complete winre system is installed in the rediscovery partition. For Dell pre-installed Vista computers, if you press F8 continuously before Vista starts booting, an additional "Repair System" option will be displayed in the advanced boot menu. Select it to start the winre system that enters the recovery partition. When Vista cannot be started at all, we can enter the winre operating system for system restoration and other recovery operations.

By default, this partition is visible in the Vista operating system and can be read and written. However, because the partition capacity is small (generally 2 GB), writing data or accidentally misoperations may damage the winre system. Therefore, we recommend that you hide the partition in the Vista system. After hiding the partition, you can still use the advanced boot menu to guide the winre system ..

3. Right-click the block where recover (d :) is located, and then click-change the drive letter and path.

4. Click "delete" to delete the drive letter of the recover (d :) partition to hide it.

Click-Yes to confirm.

● If you see the prompt shown in again, click-Yes again to confirm the modification and restart the computer.

● This prompt is not always possible. If you have restarted your computer, you can start disk management again and continue the subsequent operations.

 3. Modify drive letters of other devices such as optical drive (optional)

● Skip this part if you do not need to create a new hard disk partition whose drive letter is continuous.

5. To keep the drive letter of the hard disk partition continuous, You need to modify the drive letter of other devices before starting the partitioning operation.

● If there are multiple devices (such as two optical drives) under disk 0, you need to modify the drive letter from the lowest device.

6. Click-change in the window that opens.

7. Change the drive letter of the device as needed, and click-OK.

Click-Yes to confirm the modification.

4. shrink the Vista system partition C: Release the hard disk space to create a new partition

8. Right-click the block area where OS (C :) is located, and click-compress volume in the pop-up menu.

Wait for the system to complete the query of available compressed space.

9. Enter the size of the disk space to be released and click-compress.

● Vista disk management's compressed volume function has the following restrictions:

1. Only space at the back of the hard disk partition can be released.

2. Because the MFT reserved area exists in the middle of the NTFS partition, the maximum capacity of one partition is less than half.

3. Unlike the software such as the partition magician, what can be set here is the hard disk space to be released.

5. Create a New Partition

10. Right-click the unallocated space obtained by the preceding operation, and click-create simple volume in the pop-up menu.

11. After the Wizard Page is displayed, click-next.

12. Enter the partition size as needed and click-next.

13. click Next.

14. Set the volume label as needed and select-Execute quick formatting, and then click-next.

15. Click-finish.

16. When the status of the newly created partition changes to "-", refresh it to prevent some strange problems.

● Remember to refresh each time you create a new partition in the Operation menu.

17. Repeat the previous operations and create partitions as needed.

18. Close the Computer Management window.
