PayPal, a subsidiary of eBay, is facing an anti-monopoly charge from California, USA. The prosecution claims that eBay uses improper means to monopolize the payment methods that sellers can use on their websites.
EBay denies its monopoly. In a document submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), eBay said it had a good reason to clarify itself and would actively defend it. The company confirmed yesterday that the plaintiff filed a complaint this month, requesting eBay to pay three times the compensation and requesting the court to issue a relevant ban.
Public opinion believes that since Google released its online payment service Checkout in last June, the pressure on PayPal has remained high. At that time, eBay publicly said it would not allow users to use Google's Checkout on their own websites.
Analysts pointed out that the long-standing controversy caused by PayPal payments had occurred. In September 2006, PayPal reached an agreement with prosecutors in 28 U.S. states to address the allegations of "misleading consumers" on its website. It is reported that the company is currently negotiating with another batch of PayPal users and has reached a preliminary settlement plan.
