Using wood-carving filter to make illustration effect in Photoshop

How to use a woodcut filter to simply treat an ordinary photo as an illustration.

Wood filter is a fool-like use, but you have to understand: the ideal wood filter processing objects are important composition, too much detail and shadow will only be disposed of.

Parameters: The woodcut filter has three control parameter options sliders that determine how many colors to use and how much detail to keep. Each slider is associated with the other two, so when you understand the rationale for each slider, you can play around with the block filter.

Levels of color

The higher the number, the more colors you use and the richer the details. Low values are suitable for making abstract effects.

Edge Simplification Degree

This parameter controls the degree of edge detail so as to control the fidelity of the image and control the jagged degree of the edge.

Edge Fidelity

This parameter also controls the edge of the image, but it adjusts the edge to the original picture's degree of relevance.

Instance:

Open the photo from Photoshop from flickr image of abandoned truck.

To show that you are professional and for better results, photos can be divided into three layers – ' sky ', ' car ' and ' grass&tree '.

Then use your most heart water selection tool to pick out the sky part (I use magic wand W).

Perform "Edit > Copy" and "Edit > Paste" to create a new layer and name ' sky '.

Repeat the steps above for ' grass&tree ' and ' car '. Select the ' sky ' layer and use the Magic Wand (W) to select the bottom area, and you'll notice that ' grass&tree ' and ' car ' are also selected.

The last thing to do is to remove the car from the Layer 1 layer, draw the car's path with the Pen tool, right-click to create the selection and feather the radius -1px.

Ctrl+x cut the car part and paste it into a new layer.

Give the layer a name, such as ' car ' and ' grass&tree '.

Select ' Sky ' layer, then go to filter > Filter Gallery > Artistic effect > Woodcut. Here we set the parameter to the color order 6, the edge simplification degree of 3 and the Edge Fidelity 2.

Click OK and see the effect.

Select the ' grass&tree ' layer and turn on the wood filter again. Set the color order to 8, the edge simplification degree 3 and the Edge fidelity of 2.

Select the ' car ' layer, and then the wood filter. To keep the car realistic, we set the color order to 8, the edge simplification degree 2 and the Edge Fidelity 3 to keep it as original as possible.

Click OK, and then enjoy your first illustration of the finished product bar!
