The history of the modern software industry is not very long, and 30 years is not short. During the 30-year period, what are the most important tasks in the global software industry (assuming commercial software is temporarily excluded? The answer to this question is definitely not the only one. Now, some people come up with an answer, which has some reference value. Of course, anyone may have different opinions on this answer.

On October 15, lunar January, The Royal Pingdom published a signed article entitled "The 9 most important events in Open Source History", pointing out nine most important historical facts (sorted by age) as follows:

1. 1980 -- Usenet appears;

2. 1983-GNU plan proposal;

3. 1989--20.bsd released;

4. 1991 -- the first release of Linux;

5. 1993-Red Hat was established;

6. 1994 -- start MySQL database development;

7. 1996 -- establish Apache server;

8. 1998 -- open source code of Netscape;

9. 2004-Ubuntu was officially released.

The dispute is likely to occur in the last decade. We have to ask whether the most important thing (Event) in the global free/open source community is the release of Ubuntu during the decade? If not, what else is more important than the release of Ubuntu? From another perspective, is there anything that can be compared with the release of GNU/Linux in the last century? From the perspective of GNU/Linux, I am afraid it is not Ubuntu (free software. Mr. Mark Shuttleworth wants to forge Ubuntu into a software gift bag as a gift to humans and fulfill his wish to fly on a Russian spacecraft.

Two days ago, I visited an old friend (an old colleague of more than 40 years ago) in Tianjin. In front of his Lenovo (Vista) computer, he showed off the performance of the self-starting U disk (containing the Mint 8 Chinese edition) I brought. He first heard of the story of Ubuntu and is also interested in starting from the U disk. I told him that the problem is that the 4 GB U disk hardware is too expensive (the price is between 60 and ~ About 70 RMB ). I also told him that the kanas free software store (Shop) is currently actively looking for 1 ~ The supply of 2 gb u disk further reduces the hardware cost of kanas U disk. I hope that in the near future, people will spend 30 ~ RMB 40 can enjoy the most advanced Chinese customized version of Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS) in the world.

Note: during the past two days, I spent the first time in a friend's house playing a Vista computer. I was dizzy. The Vista system was very complicated and felt soft and slow. Honestly, it's not as agile as my U disk baby! This is a big truth.
