Before explaining IBM's virtualization products, it is necessary to sort out some of IBM's technologies applied in the products, because these technologies are applied in subsequent IBM products. As early as the 1960s S, virtualization technology began to bring IBM large hosts to the market. With the development of technology, the Logical Partitioning technology and virtual machine technology of IBM large hosts; the UNIX Server field includes IBM Power VM (Dynamic logical partitioning, differential partitioning), which is a typical application.

1. Logical partition (LPAR) and dynamic logical partition (DLPAR)

Unlike physical partitions, the Resource Division of logical partitions does not depend on their physical locations. Therefore, the CPU resource allocation granularity in each partition is a physical CPU or a smaller granularity. LPAR divides a physical server into several virtual or logical servers, and each virtual or logical server runs its own independent operating system, it has its own exclusive processor, memory, and I/O resources. ()

Dynamic logical partition Architecture

Dynamic logical partitions allow you to increase or decrease the resources occupied by partitions without interrupting application operations. The function allows the system administrator to add, delete, or move system resources between partitions, such as CPU, memory, and I/O adapter allocation, you do not need to restart the partition after modification. Whether the server can use dynamic LPAR depends on whether the software supports it. If you want to implement dynamic LPAR, you need to install AIX 5L 5.2 and later in the relevant partitions.

2. Micro-Partitioning and SPP)

The differential zone allows you to allocate CPU segments to virtual partitions. It also allows sharing of CPU, RAM, and I/O. the granularity for allocating processing resources to a partition can reach 1/10 of a CPU. by using the unlimited partition feature, you can even exceed the number of hardware configured on the partition, that is, the capacity (EC) to be used ). It can be seen that the partition is either a dedicated processor partition (distribution of processing capability based on the entire processor increment) or a shared processor partition (using a differential zone); there will be no combination of the two. When using a differential partition, you can allocate a group of processors to a shared processor pool (SPP), and then enable LPAR to use these processors (based on the capacity and priority obtained in the pool.

3. Workload partition WPAR (Workload Partitioning)

AIX version 6 allows you to group applications running in the same AIX image. Each group is called a workload partition. WPAR is a virtualized operating system environment in the AIX 6 image created by the software. It is a technology that implements virtualization through pure software. WPAR can be used to implement a new level of AIX virtualization functions. It supplements the shortcomings of the existing virtualization functions and enables the implementation without modifying the application code, it moves between different AIX instances and enables better use of resources by applications. For the applications hosted, each workload partition is a secure and isolated environment.

It is a pure AIX function that does not require any partition configuration changes and can be run on any server running AIX version 6.

The following is an example of how to use a workload partition. System B is a POWER6 system with three different workloads. Each of them can be migrated to another AIX version 6 image, even if they run on different hardware platforms. ()

Example of workload Partition

To better compare WPAR and LPAR, we provide the technical advantages of the two. ()
