Problem Statement
Storage design is an important part of virtualization design, and determining the appropriate storage type is a key step in the deployment of storage design.
Fc/fcoe, ISCSI, NFS and even local Storage, which one would you choose? See figure below.
Requirements
Customers need to migrate physical servers to VMware virtualization platforms, many physical servers using FC Sans, and some San disk capacity greater than 2T. Some of these servers run Ms Cluster Service.
Some applications require a high response time.
Assumptions
The storage support department is familiar with EMC FC Sans and has a well-established management process
Constraints
The current user's physical server uses an EMC FC SAN.
Because some physical servers are used for critical applications, they can only be performed at night. Hope that the transplant time can be within 8 hours.
Motivation
Meet the high requirements of some key applications for storage design performance
Consider the current storage support department's capabilities and propensity to choose
Architectural Decision
Storage type for new virtualization platform Select EMC FC SAN
Justification
1 P2V transplants need to be completed within 8 hours, and some SAN disk is over 2T. If the new virtualization platform uses an FC San, you can not select a large capacity San Disk when P2V. After the P2V is finished, attach the original physical machine connected San disk directly to the virtual machine in a RDM manner.
2 compared to NFS, FC support for MSCS is better.
3 Because some applications for response time is very high, hope that because the storage generated latency smaller the better. FC switching takes a very short time compared to network-based NFS.
4 The current storage support department is already familiar with FC Sans. Continued use of the technology can effectively protect the investments already made. and reduce the personnel training, additional risks, and so on that are necessary to adopt new storage technologies.
Alternatives
Iscsi/nfs/local Storage
Implications
1. Note that the number of LUNs cannot exceed the maximum number of vsphere support.
2. If physical RDM is used, VMware Sanpshot is not supported
