VMware ESX Server network installation

VMware ESX Server's hosting system is based on Linux customization, so it also supports PXE-based network boot and installation, as well as all Linux systems. In VMware ESX server 4 and its previous versions, when installing remotely over a network, you also need to configure the Web or FTP server to hold the installation media, while in VMware ESX Server 5, the steps to install are simplified if you are simply installing the ESX server 5, you can use the TFTP server alone without having to configure the Web or FTP server.

1 preparing the TFTP server for network installation

In this section, you install a TFTP server on a server in Windows Server 2008 on the same network as the server on which you are installing ESX server, place the installation image of VMware ESX Server 5 on the server side of the installation. To install VMware ESX server servers, PXE boot, install VMware ESX Server 5. Experimental network topology 1 is shown.

The steps to prepare a TFTP server for network installation are as follows:

(1) Download the TFTP server's Windows version with the TFTP server boot file pxelinux.0.

(2) on the server, create a folder as the working directory of the TFTP server, for example, create a folder named "Tftp-esx5" in the D packing directory, and copy the TFTP server and pxelinux.0 files to this directory.

(3) Copy all files (with folders) from the VMware ESX Server 5 installation disc to the Tftp-esx5 folder.

(4) Create a folder named Pxelinux.cfg in the Tftp-esx5 folder to replicate isolinux.cfg in the TFTP-ESX5 directory (this is the VMware ESX Server 5 Install one of the files in the root directory of the CD) into the Pxelinux.cfg folder. If you are installing VMware ESX Server for any server, rename isolinux.cfg to default. (6) Then click the "Settings" button in Figure 3, in the "Base directory", select the correct path for TFTP (click Browse to select the folder where TFTP is located), in "Advanced TFTP Options", select "Convert UNIX file name" and "Allow \ about virtual directory", 4 is shown. (7) Open the firewall settings, add the TFTP program, allow TFTP through the firewall, 5 as shown.

With the above settings, the TFTP server-side configuration is complete, and VMware ESX Server is installed on the server over the network.

2 Installing ESX Server over a network

We test this process in VMware Workstation 8 virtual machines.

(1) Create a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8, select VMware ESX Server 5, and set the network card to "bridged" mode.

(2) Start the virtual machine, boot from the network card, 6 as shown.

(3) After downloading the installer from TFTP, enter the installation program for VMware ESX Server 5 (7) and start installing VMware ESX server.
