VMware announced VMware vfabric suite 5.1, which has increased its automatic deployment and enterprise-level open-source support. It also increased its support for PostgreSQL and an extension of the sqlfire memory database.

Vfabric aims to simplify common enterprise-level deployment through standard open-source components, including:

    • Vfabric TC server -- springsource's Apache Tomcat-based product adds support for monitoring and application supply
    • Vfabric gemfire-a Java-based Memory Data Grid product similar to Oracle's coherence
    • Vfabric sqlfire-a standard SQL interface for core gemfire Technology
    • Vfabric rabbitmq is an open-source Message Platform Based on Advanced Message Queuing protocol (amqp)
    • Vfabric web server -- Apache Web Server of Enterprise Edition
    • Vfabric hyperic-another monitoring component that focuses on operating systems, virtual machines, databases, and application servers. It targets Web infrastructure

Version 5.1 adds two major new components to core products. The first one is vfabric application ctor, which was launched by VMware last fall, but has now been packaged into the vfabric suite kernel. It automates application deployment through blueprints, standardized templates, Component Libraries, and workflows. David mcjannet, director of cloud and application services at VMWare, told infoq: essentially, "You can automate the deployment of a given topology by using the Virtual Machine Concept of application ctor ". For example, if you have a web application that requires a Web server, two application servers, one message server, and one Database, you can build it into a blueprint, the O & M team can use the same blueprint each time resources are provided for this type of application.

The second new feature is vfabric ipvs, Which is PostgreSQL distributed by VMware and supports elastic database memory (shared database memory pool) as a virtual tool) and "smart configuration" (reduces the adjustment time after the virtual machine is re-adjusted ).

VMware also added the sqlfire feature to provide sqlfire enterprise 1.0. This version removes the number of knots that can be interconnected, adds support for nodes that can span the Wan, and provides a way to hold globally distributed data.

Finally, some customers want to use open-source runtime components, such as Apache Tomcat and Apache HTTP Server, and do not want to be forced to use vfabric for anything. VMWare also supports vfabric. Mcjannet said:

There is no doubt that developers are choosing popular technologies, and the O & M team wants to provide a support version for those open-source technologies introduced by people in one way. Vfabric suite makes it possible.

Compared with PAAs (such as VMware's cloud foundry), vfabric represents a more customary way to provide application resources. mcjannet said VMware believes this is the way applications will be deployed in the future.

The next generation of application infrastructure will be somewhat different. We have come to the client/server in the Unix era from the COBOL era in the mainframe era. Similarly, Paas will be the programming model in the cloud era. However, this requires years of transformation. Therefore, we use cloud foundry as our PAAs product and vfabric suite as the current application infrastructure.

VMware vfabric suite 5.1 is planned to be released in the second quarter of this year. The license is based on each Vm and starts at $1,500 per VM.

VMware vfabric sqlfire is now released, and its license is based on each VM. When purchasing it in part of VMware vfabric suite advanced, it costs $2,500 per VM.
