Web Service Description Language (WSDL) is an XML-based language used to describe the business services provided to enable individuals or other businesses to access those services electronically. WSDL is a milestone for unified description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI). UDDI, initiated by companies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Ariba, is designed to create an XML-based standard that allows businesses worldwide to register their names and services provided. WSDL is the language used to implement UDDI.

WSDL evolved from Microsoft's Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and IBM's Network Access Service Description Language (NASSL) and replaced both in UDDI registries as a way to express business services.
