What about VMware? Chapter 1: Background and name of Vmware

Preface: I recently learned about VMware virtualization technology. After I have finished my research, I found that I have some knowledge about the operation process and other background and name of VMware, product development process ...... I don't know anything about it. However, the summary of this knowledge on the internet is scattered, and it is not very complete. I am interested in collecting relevant content on the Internet and intend to write some introductions about VMware.

This article is dedicated to those who are interested in VMware and build a complete VMware overview for them.

Background of Vmware

Virtualization Technology was first developed in 1960s to partition mainframe hardware to improve hardware utilization. More than 30 years ago, IBM was the first to implement virtualization as a logical partition of the mainframe to form several independent virtual machines. These partitions allow the mainframe to perform "multi-task processing": run multiple applications and processes at the same time. Since the mainframe was a very expensive resource at that time, virtualization technology was designed for partitioning as a way to make full use of investment.

In 1980s and 1990s, virtualization was abandoned because of client-server applications and low-cost x86 servers and desktops. In 1990s, the widespread use of windows and the emergence of Linux as a server operating system laid the industry standard for x86 servers. The growth of X86 servers and desktop deployment brings about new IT infrastructure and operational difficulties. These challenges include:

-- Low infrastructure utilization. According to the IDC Report, the average utilization of typical X86 server deployment is only 10% to 15% of the total capacity. An organization usually runs an application on each server to avoid the risk that vulnerabilities in one application affect the availability of other applications on the same server.

-- The cost of physical infrastructure is increasing. The operational costs required to support the ever-increasing physical infrastructure have steadily increased. Most computing infrastructures must be maintained at all times, so power consumption, cooling, and facility costs do not change with utilization levels.

-- It management costs keep rising. As the computing environment becomes increasingly complex, the level of professional education and experience required by infrastructure management personnel and the related costs of such personnel also increase. Organizations spend too much time and resources on manual tasks related to server maintenance, so more people are required to complete these tasks.

-- Failover and disaster protection are insufficient. The downtime of key server applications and the unavailability of key end-user desktops have an increasing impact on the Organization. Security attacks, natural disasters, epidemics, and terrorist threats make business continuity planning for desktops and servers more important.

-- End-user desktop maintenance costs are high. The management and protection of Enterprise Desktop brings many difficulties. The distributed desktop environment is controlled without affecting the user's ability to work effectively, and management, access, and security policies are enforced, which is complex and costly to implement. You must constantly patch and upgrade a large number of applications in the desktop environment to eliminate security vulnerabilities.

In 1998, he graduated from MIT's Diane Greene (a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Vermont in 1976 and a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978, in 1988, he obtained a master's degree in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley. He noticed that the usage of computer resources was too low. mendel Rosenblum (Bachelor of mathematics from the University of Virginia, Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991), Scott Devine (Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, Stanford University), Dr. edward Wang (Bachelor of computer science in 1983, Master of Science in 1988, Doctor of Science in 1994, obtained at the University of California at Berkeley) and Edouard Bugnion (Bachelor of Science and Technology at Zurich, Switzerland, master of Stanford University) we have set up VMWare, which specializes in OS software. We look forward to fully utilizing the hardware performance and providing a low-cost environment for testing and evaluation by professional IT staff at that time. They don't know how much it industry will be affected in the near future just because of this small impulse.

Origin of VMware name

It may be because it is the same as the IT person. The name of VMware is almost the same as that of Microsoft. It seems that the pity of the big guys is not just mutual understanding.

VMware originated from "VM", the abbreviation of "virtual machine" (Virtual Machine), combined with ware in the second part of "software", and finally formed the word "VMware, virtual Machine Software.
