Linux will not replace Windows as the mainstream desktop operating environment, but it is likely to dominate the information access device. Why can't Linux replace Windows? The main reason is that most end users cannot select the operating system. The study shows that when purchasing software, users first consider their own computing needs, followed by the computer running the software. The current situation is that most software is developed for PC and Mac machines, and the majority of these machines run on Windows or Mac OS, and few applications can run on Linux platforms. But the situation is changing. Linux supporters are trying to make Windows apps run on Linux. For example, the famous desktop software developer, Corel, has made most of its products available on Linux, including the prestigious CorelDRAW and WordPerfect.

Another reason why Linux cannot dominate the desktop operating system is that its interface is not friendly. So far, although people have greatly improved the Linux user interface, Linux is still lesser compared to Windows or Mac OS. Companies such as Corel and caldera have improved the user interface in their Linux distributions, provided relatively simple installation procedures and special technical support, and provided some Linux desktop software with the release, but sometimes users still need to enter commands. For most users, Windows and Mac OS provide the perfect interface to operate the machine completely with a mouse click.

The effort to simplify the Linux interface continues. The company already offers a fully graphical Linux user interface that allows the user to operate the computer with a single mouse click, without having to tap any commands at all. As the Linux interface improves, there will be more PCs preinstalled on the Linux operating system.

But the real niche for Linux is the booming market for information access devices. These new devices have only limited memory and a price of $ hundreds of, so developers need a newer operating system instead of an expensive, bloated operating system like windows. Linux, with its short, customizable, internet-friendly compatibility and low-cost features, makes it the best choice in this area. It is for this reason that software developers have launched a Linux version that can run on mobile phones, palm devices and even cars.

In addition, Linux is well suited for a variety of dedicated computers, such as cash registers and other dedicated terminals. In these applications, Linux is a cheap, network-friendly alternative to universal operating systems such as Windows.

All in all, although we will still be using computers with Windows or Mac OS for a long time, our phones, PDAs, and various network devices will soon have a Linux interface.
