According to a report, network virtualization efforts led by Software Defined Network (SDN) and network function Virtualization (NFV) are due to skills shortage and organization/Operation Problems, the technical advantages of multi-vendor integration have not been maximized.

This is some of the main findings from Cartesian's report "The Future of networks: Coping with changes in the virtual field". Cartesian cooperates with the Broadband Forum, based on more than 40 interview reports and more than 100 online surveys, the survey is conducted for decision makers in multiple industries.

The report found that although SDN and NFV are crucial to meeting the challenges of new network Virtualization in the industry, it is clear that these two technologies have a huge development momentum, in fact, SDN/NFV is not widely used.

A thorny problem is the lack of engineers who master the relevant technologies. This is also a common problem in the technical field, especially in software development, an important part of network virtualization. The report said: "As the pace of transformation to virtual networks accelerates, the industry is facing a skill gap. respondents said they lack internal expertise and need more training investment ."

The problem is that virtualization and cloud network functions require new skills. Although industry insiders have pointed out the need to re-train and reform recruitment processes and other measures, enterprises are looking for suppliers in the short term, consultation and management services to solve the problem of skill shortage ,:

Other findings in the report include:

• Achieving faster delivery of innovative services and supporting the creation of new sources of revenue has always been regarded as the most important business driver of network virtualization.
• Network reliability is a key issue: 90% of respondents believe that virtual networks need to be as reliable as traditional networks. The reliability and stability of SDN/NFV technology is the most important concern of respondents.
• Multi-vendor integration is a challenge. In some cases, interoperability testing is postponed due to incomplete implementation of NFV specifications.
• Distributed architecture creates uncertainty in the responsibility of vendors to identify and resolve network problems. Therefore, the most cautious part of a distributed architecture is the head of network operations.
• Communication service providers are also facing huge organizational changes, which may impede stable technological transformation and worry about the lack of operational support, the trust factor between the network and IT department is the core of the cultural struggle.
• Virtualization requires a multi-disciplinary and horizontal approach. Different departments must work together to achieve the strategic goal.
• CSP must run and maintain the existing physical network in parallel with the virtual infrastructure. Management in this hybrid environment makes operational tasks more complex, and 65% of respondents believe this is the main cause of the bottleneck.

The report concluded: "Our research confirmed that network virtualization is the future development trend and the industry has started the journey of network virtualization. However, various obstacles need to be overcome to achieve smooth paths and integration processes ."
