The Debian program is a cooperative organization dedicated to creating a free operating system. The operating system we created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or Debian for short.
The operating system is a collection of basic programs and tools for computers to run. The most important part is the kernel ). The kernel is the most important program in the computer, responsible for all basic scheduling work, and allows you to run other programs.
The Debian system currently uses the Linux kernel. Linux is a software that was initially created by Linus Torvalds and is currently maintained by thousands of programmers around the world.
However, the major task of supporting other kernels in Debian is Hurd. Hurd is a set of daemon processes running on a micro-kernel (such as Mach) that provide different functions. Hurd is a free software designed by the GNU program.
Most of the basic tools we created in this operating system come from the GNU program; therefore, we name them GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd. These tools are also free.
Of course, what people really need is application software, that is, the program that helps them complete their work: from document editing, to e-commerce, to game entertainment, to software development. Debian has brought over 29000 software packages (these packages have been compiled and packaged into a convenient format for easy installation on your machine)-all of which are free software.
This is a bit like a tower: the kernel is at the bottom, all the basic tools on the kernel, and then all the software you run on your computer. Finally, at the top of this tower is Debian, which carefully organizes and cooperates everything so that they can work together in harmony.
Are all of them free?
You may wonder: why are people willing to spend their time writing software, packing it carefully, and then giving it to others? Just as many people choose to make such contributions, there are also many different answers to this question. Some people just like to help others. Some people use programming to learn
