What number formats can be used in Excel tables

By applying a different number format, you can change the appearance of a number without changing the number. The number format does not affect the actual cell values that Microsoft Office Excel uses to perform calculations. The actual values are displayed in the formula bar.

The following is a summary of the number formats available in the number group on the Start tab. To see all available number formats, click the dialog Box Launcher button image next to number.

Conventional	This is the default number format that Excel applies when you type a number. In most cases, numbers in the general format are displayed in the form of a type. However, if the cell is not wide enough to display the entire number, the general format rounds the number with a decimal point. The General number format also uses scientific count (exponential) notation for larger numbers (12-bit or more).
Numerical	This format is used for the general representation of numbers. You can specify the number of decimal places to use, whether to use the thousand separator, and how to display negative numbers.
Currency	This format is used for general currency values and displays the default currency symbol with numbers. You can specify the number of decimal places to use, whether to use the thousand separator, and how to display negative numbers.
Accounting Special	This format is also used for currency values, but it aligns the decimal points of the currency symbol and the number in a column.
Date	This format displays date and time series values as date values, based on the type and locale (country/region) you specify. The date format that begins with an asterisk (*) responds to changes in the locale date and time settings specified in Windows Control Panel. Formatting without an asterisk is not affected by the control Panel settings.
Time	This format displays the number of date and time series as a time value, based on the type and locale (country/region) you specify. The time format that begins with an asterisk (*) responds to changes in the locale date and time settings specified in Windows Control Panel. Formatting without an asterisk is not affected by the control Panel settings.
Percentage	This format displays the value of the cell as a percentage. You can specify the number of decimal places to use.
Scores	This format displays numbers as fractions, based on the fraction type you specify.
Scientific count	This format displays numbers in exponential notation, replacing part of the number with E+n, with a number of n times 10, multiplied by the numbers preceding the E (representing the exponent). For example, the "scientific notation" format for 2 decimal places displays 12345678901 as 1.23E+10, that is, the 10 power of 1.23 times 10. You can specify the number of decimal places to use.
Text	This format treats the contents of the cell as text and displays the content exactly as you type, even if you type a number.
Special	This format displays the number as a ZIP code, phone number, or social security number.
Custom	This format allows you to modify the copy of an existing number format code. This creates a custom number format and adds it to the list of number format codes. You can add 200 to 250 custom number formats, depending on the language version of Excel that you have installed.
