Introduction

This document describes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition N and Microsoft Windows XP Professional n. More information

To comply with the European Commission's resolution, Microsoft released a new version of Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Microsoft Windows XP Professional for sale in Europe. These new versions are named Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional n, where "N" represents "Not with Windows Media Player" (excluding Windows Media Player ). Apart from Microsoft Windows Media Player, Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N have the same features as Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional n contain Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2 ). Windows XP SP2 includes advanced security technologies. Other versions of Windows XP will still include Windows Media Player and will continue to be provided to European consumers.

Due to the European Commission's resolution, you must add a media player to Windows XP Home Edition N or Windows XP Professional n to perform the following tasks:

•	Play audio CD.
•	Play music files except. wav files.
•	Play a video file.
•	Stream music is played from a website over the Internet.
•	Stream videos are played from websites over the Internet.
•	Play a MIDI file.
•	Create a personal video.
•	View attributes of a media file.
•	View the album art of a media file.
•	Transfers a music file to a personal music player.
•	Copy music from audio CD to a computer (record CD ).
•	Create an audio CD ).
•	Manage music and videos in a library containing album, artist, and title information.
•	Creates a music playlist.
•	Use the synchronized and accessible media exchange (SAMI) technology to view subtitle display support for hearing impaired users.

A computer manufacturer can pre-install a third-party media player on a computer running Windows XP Home Edition N or Windows XP Professional n. You can also install Microsoft or a third-party Media Player.

Different software programs depend on different files, some of which may not be included in Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional n. This example includes the media functions of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Encarta, and Microsoft FrontPage. To ensure that these programs work properly, install Windows Media Player and install one of the following media packs:

•	Media Pack for Windows XP Home Edition n
•	Media Pack for Windows XP Professional n

Microsoft Windows Movie Maker also needs Windows Media Player. To ensure that Windows Movie Maker works properly, install Windows Media Player and install one of the following utilities:

•	Windows Movie Maker utility for Windows XP Home Edition n
•	Windows Movie Maker utility for Windows XP Professional n

Different websites may also depend on some files not found in Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional n. To ensure that these websites work properly, install Windows Media Player and one of the following media packs:

•	Media Pack for Windows XP Home Edition n
•	Media Pack for Windows XP Professional n

After installing Windows Media Player, you can only download and install the following programs from the Microsoft Windows Update Website:

•	Media Pack for Windows XP Home Edition n
•	Media Pack for Windows XP Professional n
•	Windows Movie Maker utility for Windows XP Home Edition n
•	Windows Movie Maker utility for Windows XP Professional n

To install the latest version of Windows Media Player, visit the following Microsoft Website:
