Whether monitoring the performance of the system, or to explore the cause of the failure, the real key is to find the right tool. Open the XP All Programs menu, and there's a whole bunch of tools under System Tools for you to choose from. However, if you are an experienced user, Windows XP has another big gift package for you: There are more than 100 different tools hidden on the installation CD. They cover all aspects of the operating system, from the network and the Internet to folder and Disk Management, without being unprepared. This is a toolset called Windows Support Tools (Support tools), designed specifically for users who are unwilling to stay on Windows fur.

Before digging into this treasure, I would warn you that misuse of certain tools can endanger the system itself. Do not use tools in order to use the tool, to run each tool in the heart to have a clear goal, careful operation.

Windows XP is installed by default without Support tools, which must be installed manually with the Windows installation CD. During installation, the wizard asks you whether you want to perform a typical or full installation, and a typical installation will have 57 tools installed, and 103 tools will be installed in full installation mode. After the installation is complete, a new folder will be added to the Program Files directory support Tools. The tools obtained by using the complete installation method are more natural and the more tools are used to diagnose network and server-related problems. We can give a few examples to see the rich features of Support tools: Application Monitor Apimon.exe, counting and timing all function calls, monitoring page invalidation errors, disk probe Dskprobe.exe, direct access, editing, Save and copy areas of the hard drive, which may be difficult to access in regular ways, such as its ability to replace the master boot record (MBR) of the hard disk, repair a damaged partition table, and a Windiff.exe that can analyze two files or folders to compare the differences.

first, the general use of the process

If you want to understand the general use of a program, the best way is to read the Support Tools help document, which is under the All Programs menu. In this Help document, you can find an alphabetical list of tools that contain most of the tools for support tools and their functional descriptions. Some of the tools are self-contained. HLP help file, open \\Program Files\\Support Tools folder, double-click one. HLP file to view its contents.

Most of the tools can be double-clicked with the program Files\\Support Tools folder. EXE file, but not every tool has a graphical user interface, and some tools have to run from the command line, which is typically run with command-line parameters, and the program name of a tool is added "/? "parameter to obtain a list of command-line arguments and their purpose description.

Second, install from the command line

Sometimes Windows XP does not start and requires support tools to help identify the cause of the failure. However, if the system does not have support tools installed, it is impossible to use support tools. Don't worry, Msiexec can help. msiexec can perform installation, modification, and other actions for Windows Installer (Windows Installer) from the command line.

Execute Support Tools on the command line the typical installation command is: msiexec/i x: \\support\\tools\\suptools.msi/q, where x is the CD drive letter. The fully installed command is: msiexec/i x:\\support\\tools\\suptools.msi/q addlocal=all, where Addlocal=all indicates that all the tools are installed.
   Third, handling software uninstall failure

After you run out of software, you may want to remove it. However, sometimes the original should be easy to delete operations, the system is inexplicably panic, or the emergence of strange error messages. There are many reasons for the deletion failure, possibly because the software itself has not been adequately tested, or if the registry configuration is corrupted or invalid. Don't worry, Support tools can help you. In fact, you can find two windows Installer Cleanup tools: Msicuu.exe,msizap.exe. The latter's English name is Windows Installer zapper, which can only be run from the command line.

Msicuu.exe: This tool clears the files, folders, and registry information that is added to the system when you install programs in Windows Explorer. If Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel is not valid for a software, Msicuu.exe is worth a try. Msicuu.exe provides an Easy-to-use dialog window to help you clean up the problematic software. Note You must log on to Windows XP as an administrator when you use Msicuu.exe, or you will be prompted for an error message.

All actions performed with Msicuu.exe are recorded in a log file, which is the Msicu.log file saved in the Windows\\Temp directory. The content of this log file is cumulative, each time you delete a software, the operation details are recorded to the log.

Msizap.exe: The main function is similar to Msicuu.exe, the biggest difference is that Msizap.exe runs from the command line and does not provide a window interface. It is also important to note that Msizap.exe is likely to remove essential system files, so you can consider using Msizap.exe only if Add or Remove Programs, Msicuu.exe are invalid. The way to start Msizap.exe is to click "Start"-" All Programs-Windows Support Tools-Command Prompt, enter Msizap.exe and press ENTER. Msizap.exe will display the command line arguments available in the command window.

To clear an installed software with Msizap.exe, you must specify the software's identity in the registry on the command line. The software identification can be found under the Hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/uninstall key in the registry. For example, if you want to use Msizap.exe to clear all content related to the Acme antivirus software, execute the command: MSIZap T {66ch7520-b423-4bd1-a7e4-75bb8b44740e}.

   Iv. managing Documents and directories

Directory Disk usage is Diruse.exe, which is also a command-line tool. You can use it to view the size of the directory, detailed compression information (for NTFS partitions only). In addition to the disk space occupied by a folder, it can set the maximum space limit for a specified folder, and an alert occurs when the folder occupies more space than the limit.

Diruse.exe is the ideal tool for managing a common PC, and can closely monitor all user accounts in combination with the disk management features of Windows. Users with administrator privileges can check the usage of all directories, including those that are not part of the current account.

When Windows can not start, can only enter the Recovery Console, Support Tools is a rare magic weapon. For example, you can use the File version tool (Filever.exe) to view the execution file information that is saved in the directory, including the details that are usually visible only when Windows is running normally, especially when you are getting it. The exact version number of the EXE file.

   v. Documentation Information

The Visual File Information tool (Vfi.exe) can be started with the Run dialog box, which is a tool with a graphical interface. You can use it to display a detailed description of the file. Vi. Looking for duplicate documents

The duplicate File Lookup tool (Dupfinder.exe) may be one of the most useful tools in support tool. If you're going to clean up the extra files in the system, Dupfinder.exe is definitely worth a try. Dupfinder.exe provides a graphical user interface that is easy to use. Even so, be careful when you use it, and don't delete it immediately after you find duplicate files. A more secure approach is to rename the duplicate file first, to see if the system is working properly, to test for a period of time to confirm that the system function is not affected, and then to delete duplicate files.

After starting Dupfinder.exe, enter a directory name (default c:\\) in the Search in input box, and click the Start Search button to begin searching. Searching the entire C: drive may take some time.

The search results appear in the list below the window. Right-clicking on a file allows you to delete, move, rename, view information, and so on. You must be cautious about deleting files for Windows system folders (and their subfolders), and if you have duplicate files in other folders, you should reserve the files for the Windows System folder first.
