Win2000 boot disk and System Recovery

Source: Internet

First of all, we need to explain to you: we will mention three things: the Win2000 boot disk, the Win2000 system to save the disk, and the Win2000 installation CD. These three are completely different. They differ greatly from each other in terms of creation and use. They will be introduced separately later. The core content of this article is also removed from these three disks.

First, let's talk about the Win2000 boot disk.

The Win2000 boot disk must be used to start the Win2000 system. Its classic production method is also provided by Windows as follows:

There is a bootdisk directory in the Win2000 installation disc. The makeboot command for making the boot disk is in it. You can enter the command in the command line. : \ Bootdisk \ makeboot a: (drive: The drive letter of the disc)

To create a set of Setup boot disks, run Makeboot.exe from the Bootdisk folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM:

1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box type" : \ Bootdisk \ makeboot a: "(without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER, where Is the letter ofyour CD-ROM drive.
This disk requires a total of four floppy disks. I am sorry to tell you that these four disks are useless. They simply cannot start the machine to the extent that an interface is provided. You can do nothing except watching the startup process run. After the four disks are replaced, you must provide the installation disc before entering the console. Therefore, only these four boot disks can be used. Therefore, the function of these four disks is only: if your computer does not support starting from the disc, you need to start the machine. If you already have a Win2000 installation CD, the machine can also be started from the CD. This disk is useless.

Another Windows boot disk:

There are many articles on the internet saying that several files can be copied to a floppy disk to enable Windows2000. This is indeed much easier than four disks. These files are: BOOT. INI, BOOTSECT. DOS, IO. SYS, MSODS. SYS, NTDETECT. COM, and NTLDR. However, the so-called boot disk with these 6 files cannot direct the machine to the console that we can control. At best, it can only be a boot disk of Windows2000. It fully records the installation of this machine in different hard disk partitions. When your multi-boot menu is damaged or the Boot Sector is damaged, it can help you reboot to Windows or Windows on the hard disk. Other things cannot be done. In addition, it is not easy to copy these six files. In Win2000, these are all system files. It cannot be copied. Changing the file attributes cannot solve the problem. You need to switch to another operating system for copying.

Windows System Disk saving:

You created an Emergency Repair Disk in Windwos2000. The method is as follows:

Click Start> program> accessories> System Tools> Backup.

In the Tools menu, click Create an emergency repair floppy disk ".

Follow the instructions on the screen.
Note:A 1.44 MB blank floppy disk is required to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD ).

The repair process depends on the information stored in the systemroot \ repair folder. You cannot change or delete this folder.

Select "back up the registry to the repair directory" as much as possible to save the current registry file to a folder in the systemroot/repair folder. This is useful when you need to restore the system.

The system also provides other information about the repair process. For details, refer to Windows Help.

Use Emergency Repair Disk

An Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) can help you fix or recover systems that cannot load Windows 2000, or fix problematic system files and Partition Boot sectors. This usually occurs when the hard disk fails or some system files are damaged or accidentally deleted. The system file is used to load, configure, and run the operating system in Windows 2000. If some system files are lost or damaged, you can use ERD to fix these files.

The Partition Boot Sector contains information about the file system structure and operating system commands. If the computer is a dual boot system, ERD contains information about the operating system to be started and how to start it.

The ERD should be updated regularly so that the latest system settings are recorded on the disk. ERD is designed to restart the computer and repair system files. It does not back up files or programs.

Note:Generally, do not use ERD to fix registry issues. The Registry copy restored by ERD is the original registry after installation.

Restore settings from Emergency Repair Disk

For Intel-based computers, use Windows 2000 installation disk or Windows 2000 Professional disc to start the computer.

After the installer completes copying files from the installation disk, the system restarts and starts the text-based installation mode.

On the installation welcome screen, press the R key to choose whether to fix or recover Windows 2000 installation.

When you are prompted to enter the repair type or required repair options, press the R key to repair the corrupted Windows 2000 installation.

Click quick fix or manual fix ".

If you want the installer to selectively repair system files, Partition Boot sectors, or start the environment, press the M key to manually fix the problem. Manual repair does not fix the registry.

If you want the installer to automatically repair the system file, Partition Boot Sector, and startup environment, press the F key to perform quick repair. The Registry restored by the installer is the Registry created when Windows 2000 is installed for the first time. Quick fixes do not require additional user interaction operations.

Follow the prompts and insert ERD when prompted. If you have an original Windows 2000 CD, you can have the installer verify that the disk is damaged ).

After the repair is completed, the computer restarts and runs Windows 2000.

Best Solution:

In fact, windows can be installed on a large extent and can be started from a CD. Therefore, a reasonable system recovery solution should be as follows:
1) Be sure to create a system to save the disk.
2) Keep your Windows2000 installation CD.
3) when the system is faulty. There are two differences: the startup problem or other problems. If it is a startup problem, especially if the multi-boot menu is damaged, use CD boot to restore the system when the system prompts that the system is inserted to save the disk. If there are other problems, use the CD boot to go To the Windows2000 console.
