There are three main options for failover operations for Hyper-V replication:

Planned failover, as the name implies, is a pre-determined plan to fail over. This approach needs to meet two prerequisites: The virtual machine must be shut down before the initial failover, the replication host must also enable replication, and allow replication from the replication host to be received.

Test failover, which operates on the replication server, allows you to build and start a new virtual machine for testing purposes without disrupting the current persistent replication configuration.

Unplanned failover, it's easy to understand that when a replicated host is accidentally down, we can perform a "failover" on the replication host and launch the VM online.

In the previous section, we talked about test failover, and we've learned a little more about planned failover and unplanned failover, and here I've simply drawn a diagram to help my friends get to know about failover.

One, planning for failover

In fact, planning failover this feature, personally feel that there is not much use, because if it is a planned failover, I can do a manual migration directly to another server, and to avoid the failover of the unnecessary trouble, but not the absolute, sometimes you may need to use this feature.

1, first we need to shut down the primary virtual machine, otherwise the replica virtual machine can not start, will prompt the primary virtual machine is active state.

2. Right-click the primary virtual machine, select "Copy" click "Scheduled Failover (P) ..."

3, this time the system will do the corresponding conditions to confirm, here we can see Windows Server R2 on the basis of Windows Server 2012 added a new option, namely: "After failover to change the direction of replication to the opposite direction", Previously we need to go to the replica server configuration, now no, save a step of trouble. Click "Failover (F)"

4, first of all, the system will make a judgment, in the case of the prerequisite is not a problem, the master VM changes to replicate to the replica virtual machine, and then failover, here Prompt "failover complete."

5. We may see that the replica virtual machine has been started automatically.

6, here we test if you modify the content on the replica virtual machine, will not change to the main virtual machine, add ABCD characters.

7, this time we can actually look at this is the replica server has pointed to TestServer01.

8, we can right-click to see the corresponding replication health is normal.

9, the following we re-planned failover of the win2012r2-test03

10, the same it will tell the configuration reverse copy

11, the migration is successful.

12, this time we can see win2012r2-test03 has migrated to the TestServer01 server.
