Domain Name change tool (domains Rename tools) is a new network maintenance tool that adapts to the needs of users. This tool greatly alleviates the pressure of network management in domain renaming operations in Windows NT and Windows 2000/XP times.

  First, advantages

We can find out the advantages of the Windows Server 2003 domain Rename tool by simply comparing the domain rename operation in Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 20,033 systems.

Windows NT: A new domain and domain controller with different names needs to be established, and then the account database for the old domain is rebuilt in the new domain.

Windows 2000: You need to create a new domain and domain controller with different names, and then use ADMT (AD Database Migration Tool) to migrate ad databases from the old domain to the new domain, and there is no tedious operation to rebuild the database in the Windows NT era.

Windows Server 2003: You do not have to create a new domain with different names, and you do not need to rebuild or migrate the ad database, just use the domain Rename tool to do a few simple things.

  Second, the actual field renamed

Suppose you now need to rename shyzhong.com to lovebook.cn, and rename the following specific actions:

Click "Manage this DNS server" in the "Manage Your Server" interface, then click "dns→ computer Name" In the pop-up window, and right-click "Forward lookup zone". Select the new zone item from the shortcut menu that pops up (Figure 1).

Figure 1

Open the New Zone Wizard, go to the Zone Type settings box, and select the default state. After you enter the active directery zone replication scope Setting box, select the to all domain controllers in the active Directery domain shyzhong.com item. In the next Area Name box, type the changed field name, such as "lovebook.cn", and then click the Next button. Select the default state completion setting in the Dynamic Update Settings box. Upon completion of the above operation, it is equal to the completion of the target domain establishment.

In Windows Server 2003, only when the domain and forest functional levels are promoted will the system allow the domain name to be changed, so click on the "start → settings → control panel → admin tools →active directory domain and trust relationship" and right-click on the open window. Shyzhong.com ", select" Raise Domain Functional Level "in the pop-up menu (Figure 2).

Figure 2

Go to the Raise Domain functional Level dialog box, click the arrow to the right below the "Select an available domain functional level" item, select "Windows Server 2003" In the pop-up Drop-down list and click on the "Promote" button below, then click "OK" in the pop-up prompt box. After the pop-up level promotion successful prompt box, click "OK" button.

The forest level elevation operation is then also performed. Select the Active directory domain and trust relationships item and right-click and choose the Raise forest functional level item in the pop-up menu. In the pop-up menu of the Raise Forest functional Level dialog box, select Windows Server 2003 mode and click the "Promote" button.

After the above preparation, you can now use the Domain Rename tool "Rendom" to complete the domain name change. Put the Windows Server 2003 installation CD into the optical drive, and copy the Domren directory under "\valueadd\msft\mgmt" to the system's C-packing directory. Next, enter the Domren directory in the Command Prompt window and enter the "rendom/list" command. This command generates descriptive information for the current forest (the XML encoding structure will be used to write information to an output file with the default file name Domainlist.xml).

Then use Notepad to edit the Domainlist.xml file. Replace all of the "shyzhong.com" with the name "lovebook.cn" of the new domain, and then save the NetBIOS name after the corresponding replacement. Then return to the Command Prompt window and enter the "rendom/upload" command at the command line.

hint : The actions and directories that the upload command performs are therefore intended for future renaming operations.

Then enter the "rendom/prepare" command and the "Rendom/execute" command in turn.

The Rendom/prepare command is primarily used to verify that all domain controllers that are connected to the domain are ready, and that if "successfully" information appears, the connection to each domain controller succeeds. In addition, this test examines each domain controller for authorization to determine whether the user running the "rendom/prepare" command has been authorized to execute the rename instruction. If the user does not get write authorization, the command will fail.

The "Rendom/execute" command is used to issue instructions for formally changing the domain name, and if the "successfully" information appears, the renaming process for the domain is completed successfully.

After the above command has finished executing, the system will automatically shut down and reboot. In addition, all computers in the domain must perform two shutdown operations, the first shutdown is used to make new domain membership effective, and the second shutdown is used to automatically convert the computer's DNS suffix to the new domain name.

Tip : If the DNS suffix is not automatically changed, you can right-click on the "My Computer" icon, in the pop-up menu select "Properties", enter the "Computer name" tab to set the interface, click the "Change" button and follow the instructions.

Third, adjust Group Policy and delete original domain name

After you have finished renaming the domain, if you also want the related settings in Group Policy to continue to be applied, you need to enter the following command at the command prompt in the command line:

Gpfixup/olddnsshyzhong.com/newd nslovebook.cn/oldnbshyzhong/newnblovebook/dclovebook.cn

After executing the above command (the intermediate Domain name section can be modified according to the actual situation), if you see the "Start Fixing Non-site Group Policy Links" information, the above command has been successfully executed.

Finally, you need to use the "Rendom/clean" command to remove the original domain name from Active Directory. Once the "Rendom/clean" command has been successfully run, the New forest will be ready for the next forest restructuring exercise.
