The previous article describes the file classification feature of FSRM, which introduces another important feature file masking for FSRM.

File screen Management allows you to prevent users from storing specific types of files in a volume or folder tree. The file screen is applied to all folders in the specified path. File screen management control file types through filegroups, for example, you can create a file screen rule to prevent users from saving video and audio files to their personal folders on the server. As with all FSRM components, you can also choose to send mail or other notifications to file screen to report file screen event firings.

File screens can be configured in two modes, active or passive:

Active mode: Active masking prevents users from saving unauthorized file types to the server and generates a configured notification message when the user tries to save.

Passive mode: Passive masking mode sends a configured notification to the user when the user saves the specified file type, but it does not prevent the user from saving the file on the server.

When you deploy file screen management, consider using a file screen template that comes with Windows, or you can customize a filegroup to add the file types you want to block into this filegroup. You can also set the exception file type in the filegroup, with exception settings that allow wildcards, such as It*.mp4, where the MP4 files at the beginning of the it are allowed to be stored in the folder. You can also create a subfolder in a folder that holds files that are blocked by the parent folder.

File masking does not remove files that have been saved in a folder before the masking feature is applied, regardless of whether the file belongs to a masked file type.
