Longhorn, the development code for Microsoft's next-generation server and desktop operating system, was proposed a few years ago. As early as July 2005, Microsoft renamed its next-generation desktop operating system to Windows Vista, and it was launched by the end of November 2006. By contrast, The server version has been holding the pipa half cover.

Finally, Microsoft at the July 2007 Partner Conference (Worldwide Partner Conference) officially announced that Microsoft server operating system Windows Server 2008 will be officially released in Los Angeles, United States, February 27, 2008, Products that are also published are new Visual Studio and SQL Server.

Virtualization feature Promotion

First, let's take a look at the upgrade of Windows Server 2008 in Server virtualization. In Windows Server 2008, Virtual Server 2005 will be virtualized servers (Windows Server Virtualization, referred to as WSv) instead. WSv contains features that address many of the challenges of virtualization, and will provide dynamic additions to the processor, which means that users can add idle processor resources to the virtual host at any time as needed.

At the same time, WSv can also support dynamic hardware add, users can dynamically add/remove memory, network adapters and storage resources, this feature allows users to accurately allocate WSv host processing capabilities. WSv also has a number of highlights, such as supporting a paging file between Linux operating systems and virtual machines (page files ) sharing, virtual machine network startup, and hot backup of virtual machines via Volume Shadow Copy service (Volume Shadow copy service, vss). Also, WSv supports virtual machines to browse and apply data to the parent server.

For a number of services, a large IT group with complex application environments, WSv solves the role separation problem on the merged server, allowing the virtual machine to run under a service account with only the required privileges, while simplifying the operation and protecting the host operating system. In addition, WSv can also provide thermal migration functions, This means that a user can migrate a running virtual machine from one physical server to another, while uninterrupted service (this feature can appear in the original version of Windows Server is not yet certain).

simplifies the installation process

Another exciting feature of Windows Server 2008 is the Server Core, which provides a streamlined installation that allows users to install without a graphical interface. An administrator can choose to install a minimal installation that has specific features but does not contain any features that are not required.

We note that WSv is a program available under the core of the server, which will greatly reduce the cost of user use. Previously, if users wanted to install the operating system on a virtual device, they would need to purchase relevant applications, such as VMware, and now use the Free WSv virtualization program, You can leave this part of the overhead to the user.

Terminal Services Enhancements

Windows Server 2008 follows the pace of Windows Vista, and users can access Terminal Services using remote Desktop Connection 6.0. The program supports a large desktop with a level spanning multiple monitors, but with a maximum resolution of 4096x 2048, also support 16:9, 16:10 and so on display ratio. If you install the Desktop Experience (Desktop experience) program in Windows Server 2008, users can use desktop themes, photo management, and other features in remote connections.

Terminal Services RemoteApp is a new remote application display method provided by Windows Server 2008, which complements the Terminal Services display method by displaying the entire Remote Desktop to users who access the application in the window. That is to say, The remote program's running display will be very close to the local program. Also, RemoteApp only maintains a central application on the server, reducing server workload.

With Terminal Services Web Access (TS Web Access), users can access the Terminal Services RemoteApp program through a Web browser without installing any software.
