In the common remote control method, the RDP protocol used by Microsoft Remote Desktop should be one of the most efficient and the best user experience, and can get very good remote operation performance even in the poor network environment of the public network remote connection. Even under Linux there are XRDP such as the RDP Remote Operation tool implementation.

However, RDP also has a more obvious disadvantage is that its services need to occupy a specific port, if you need to access the public intranet host, configure Port mapping is too cumbersome. As a result, the Remote Desktop Gateway functionality provided by Windows Server is a valuable feature in this scenario.

The main principle of Remote Desktop Gateway is not complicated, in fact, is through a server as a proxy connection to other Remote Desktop host intranet, and the relevant data sent to the resource requester. The following is an introduction to the installation configuration process for Remote Desktop Gateway.

1. Installing related Remote Desktop Services

Open Server Manager and select Add roles and features.

On the Server Roles page, select Install the Remote Desktop Services role.

If you want to use Remote Desktop Gateway just like me, on the Role service configuration page of Remote Desktop Services, select Install Remote Desktop Connection Broker, Remote Desktop licensing, and Remote Desktop Gateway service. Several other services can choose to install according to actual needs, but you need to be aware of the minimum system configuration requirements for remote session Host and Remote Desktop Virtualization host.

Confirm the installation and wait for the installation process to complete.

2. Activating Remote Desktop Services

Depending on Microsoft's product strategy, features such as Remote Desktop Services require a separate license to be installed. Before you can use related services for Remote Desktop Services, you need to license the current server first. Note that the activation method used here is from the Internet, do not use this activation mode for commercial environments.

Start RD licensing Manager in Server Manager first.

In RD licensing Manager, right-click the current server and select Activate Server.

Select the Activate connection method as "Web browser" to get the activation code from the Web page.

Make a note of the current server's product ID and open it in the browser https://activate.microsoft.com

Select "Enable license Server" to register the current server.

Enter the product ID and company information.

Note the acquired license server ID.

and enter the license server ID on the previous Server Activation Wizard page.

After you complete the Remote Desktop Server registration, you will also need to continue adding licenses to the server.

Continue to the Server Activation Wizard. And prompted earlier, "Do you want to install the Client Access License on the license server with this product ID now?" The page select Yes to proceed to the next license request.

Select the license program as an "enterprise agreement" and provide the relevant company information.

Because I only need a convenient Remote Desktop Gateway server, in the product type, select "Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services per User Client Access License", the number is sufficient. and enter the agreement number for the company information in the agreement number.

Make a note of the license Key pack ID and fill in the Server Activation Wizard to complete the license additions.

After you add a license package, the current server in RD Licensing Manager may also have a warning flag prompt.

In this case, further use of the review Configuration feature is required.

Add the current license server and the account to the AD domain.

After all the review entries have passed, activating Remote Desktop Services is basically complete.

3. Remote Desktop Gateway Follow-up configuration

After you activate the Remote Desktop server, you also need to make subsequent configuration to use the Remote Desktop Gateway service properly. The related configuration is primarily in the RD Gateway Manager.

Configuring policies

New policy, select Create Rd cap and Rd RAP (recommended), next.

Enter Rd-cap name

Select the authentication method, add the allowed groups of users, or add the allowed computer devices (if you only want specific devices to be remotely accessible).

Select the device you want to redirect as needed

Set up session configuration as needed

Confirm Rd-cap Configuration

Set Rd-rap name

Select User Group

Select Network Resource

Select the Allowed ports

Confirm Rd-rap Configuration

Click Finish

4. Using the Remote Desktop Gateway server on the client

After you set up the Remote Desktop gateway correctly, you can connect to Remote Desktop services directly from the client through the RD Gateway server.
