Windows server, Server Core management

When you install Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server R2, there is a situation in the Setup Wizard where two installation modes appear when you install the Unified version: Full installation and Server Core installation mode (server kernel installation)

Many friends are unfamiliar with Windows Server 2008 and may not understand this pattern very well. Here I briefly introduce:

1. Full installation mode : If you choose this mode to install the system, with the simplified interface of Windows system style, is our traditional understanding of Windows Server: Most operations can be done through the interface. such as:

2. Server Core installation mode.
in this mode, the system is installed only by the command line, all operations must be done by command (similar to the earlier Linux). Such as:

The Server core model puts a lot of pressure on many administrators, after all operations are done by command, and many itpro and it enthusiasts ask the question: Why does Microsoft want to develop such a pattern of Windows Server?

Microsoft's main considerations are two areas: reduced system resource consumption and improved system security.

1) Reduce the consumption of system resources.

The release of Windows Vista has brought a big blow to Microsoft. Many customers who buy Windows Vista license also just downgrade the system using Windows XP, including Microsoft also acknowledges that Windows Vista is a failed product. The reason for the failure is that Microsoft is too compromised with hardware vendors, so the hardware requirements for Windows Vista are too high.

Windows Server 2008 takes this as a lesson, so the mode of Server Core is more in Windows Server 2008 (personal guessing)

We can imagine an enterprise environment, if the company has a server, only 2GB of memory, if the full mode installed, the computer as long as a boot 1GB memory is consumed by the system, this situation is a lot of companies can not accept. If you install Server Core, the system will boot up to 256MB of memory, so that extra memory can be saved to the user to access. This is a good way to improve the number and speed of user access.

2) Improved system security

Because Server Core mode is a minimal environment for Windows Server. There are almost no interface-based management tools, which ensures that as few zones as possible start up services and open ports. Windows Server security is reduced by reducing the attack surface of the window servers.

Although the server core has such two good advantages, but due to the complexity of management, many administrators have opted for "distance."

But don't worry, some foreign Microsoft enthusiasts have written some of the management tools under the Server Core platform, of which Coreconfigrator is the most famous.

In Windows Server in Server Core, use Coreconfigrator 1.0

In Windows Server R2 Server Core, use the Coreconfigrator2.0

Because Coreconfigrator 1.0 is relatively simple, so there is no need to introduce, the following is mainly about Windows Server R2 under the Coreconfigrator 2.0 configuration, the following is the steps

1. Install Windows Server R2 Server Core system

2. Download Coreconfigrator 2.0 (:http://coreconfig.codeplex.com/releases/view/36678) from the website

3. (particularly important)

Install the two components of Microsoft. NET FrameWork 2.0 and Windows Powershell into the Server Core system. The command is as follows:

Dism/online/enable-feature/featurename:netfx2-servercore

Dism/online/enable-feature/featurename:microsoftwindowspowershell

4. Insert the Downloaded Coreconfigrator 2.0 ISO file into the system. Start_coreconfig.wsf appears in the running Image Coreconfigor 2.0 management Interface

The interface management of Core Configrator 2.0 is simple and does not need to be explained in detail.

Note points used by Windows server R2 Server Core:

1. Windows Server R2 Server Core is generally used as the base application platform for the company and is not generally used as an application platform.

Servers that are recommended for Server Core: File server, DC, Dns,ca, Dhcp,hyper-v.

Server platforms that are not available: SQL Server, Exchange server, RDP server, and so on

2. Windows Server R2 Server Core can be a Web server backend, but be aware that:

If the system is Windows Server, Server Core. Unable to mount Web site based on. NET Platform development

If the system is Windows Server R2 server Core. Any web can be mounted

3. In Servercore, if you use the command installation feature or role, the function and role names must be exactly correct (including case)

4. Window server Full installation and server Core installation prices are the same at the time of purchase

(Many people think that the price of Server Core is cheaper than a fully installed one, which is wrong)
