DHCP Relay Agent role:
In a large network, there may be multiple subnets. The DHCP client obtains the IP address after receiving a response from the DHCP server over the network broadcast message. However, broadcast messages cannot span subnets. So, if the DHCP client and server are in different subnets, can the client also request an IP address from the server? This will use the DHCP relay agent. DHCP Relay Agent is actually a software technology, the computer that installed the DHCP relay agent is called the DHCP relay proxy server, it undertakes the communication task of DHCP client and server between different subnets.
A relay Agent is a small program that relays DHCP/BOOTP messages between clients and servers on different subnets. According to the request for Comments (RFC), the DHCP/BOOTP Relay Agent is part of the DHCP and BOOTP standards and functionality.

Build an experimental environment (VMware workstation)

1. One Windows2008 (DHCP server)
2. One Windows2008 (DHCP Relay Agent)
3. One windowsxp (client)
4. One Win7 (client)

Experimental steps:
Step One: Configure the IP for the DHCP server,
Configure two NICs and IPs for the DHCP relay agent.
Step Two: Install the DHCP service on the DHCP server and configure the above IP address pool.
Step three: Add the role ' Network Policy and Access Service ' to the DHCP relay Agent

Step four: Wait for the installation.
Step five: After the installation is successful, click the ' Close ' button.

Step Six: Configure Trunk routing.

1. Click start → administrative tools → routing and remote Access.

2. The ' Routing and Remote Access ' window pops up.

3. Right-click ' Local computer ' to select ' Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access '.

4. Click ' Next '.

5. Select ' Custom Configuration ' and click ' Next '.

6. Select ' LAN routing ', click ' Next ', click ' Finish ' button to complete the initial configuration.

7. Click ' Start service ' and wait for the initialization to complete.

8. Configuration items are added to the Administration window.

9. Expand ' IPv4 ', right-click ' General ', select ' New Routing protocol ', select ' DHCP Relay Agent ', click ' OK '.

10. Add completion, right-click ' DHCP Relay Agent ', select ' Add interface ', select interface for ' Relay Agent ', select ' Local connection 2 ' here.
    Click ' OK '.

11. Tick ' relay DHCP packet ' and click ' OK '.

12. Specify the proxy target (which server is the relay agent), right-click the ' DHCP Relay Agent ', select ' Properties '.

    13, add the destination IP. Click ' Apply ' and click ' OK '.

    14. DHCP Relay Agent configuration is complete.
