Open Registry Editor, locate the "Hkey_local_machine\system\current\controlsetcontrol" branch, and locate the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" key value in the right window. Double-click to modify it, adjusting its value from the default of 20000 (in milliseconds) to a smaller number, such as 5000 or even 1000, so that if Windows Vista does not receive a service shutdown signal in 5 seconds (5000) or 1 seconds (1000), The system pops up a warning window informing the user that the service cannot be aborted and gives the option to force the abort or continue waiting for the user to choose.

Tip: WaitToKillServiceTimeout is to give a buffer of time to end the service, so that these executing programs have enough time to write back the data in the cache before the system closes. If you do not have enough buffer time, the data will be lost, so we recommend that you develop a good habit of saving documents at any time.

Shorten the wait time before shutting down applications and processes

Similar to the wait time before the service is shut down, Windows Vista also has a time to wait for the program or process to shut itself down before the application is forced to close, and the Windows system will not force it to abort until it has exceeded that time limit.

As a result, reducing the default shutdown applications or waiting times can also speed up Windows Vista shutdown.

Open Registry Editor, locate the "Hkey_local_machine\system\current\controlsetcontrol" branch, and locate the "Hungapptimeout" registry key in the right window. This entry corresponds to the system's wait time when the user forcibly shuts down a process or application, if the object does not respond. The default value is "5000", which can generally be modified to "1000".

Note: However, even if we set the value of "hungapptimeout" small, it does not mean that Windows Vista automatically aborts the program or process after the wait time exceeds that time limit, and still pops up a dialog box to allow the user to confirm whether or not to abort. If you feel that this is too cumbersome, you can make Windows Vista automatically break the running of the process after it has exceeded the wait time limit by modifying the registry key.
