When you press F8 when the system starts Windows XP, the Advanced Options menu for Windows XP startup is displayed, which allows you to choose a different mode to start Windows XP. Here are the meanings of these options.

1. Safe Mode: When you start Windows XP in Safe mode, the system only calls some of the most basic files and drivers, uses only a small number of devices, and does not load anything in the startup group, does not connect to the network after startup, and many devices do not
Use the optical drive in Safe mode (in Windows XP). This pattern helps diagnose problems with the system, and if a newly added device or system has a problem with the driver, you can enter Safe mode, remove the problem device, and then install it. If you do not resolve the problem in Safe mode, you will probably need to reuse the installation disc to repair the system.

2. Secure mode with network connection: This pattern uses basic files and drivers and, compared to safe mode, it also loads the network driver, whose primary role is essentially the same as Safe mode, but it does not support networking with PCMCIA cards, a mobile card that follows the International Association specification for personal Computer memory cards. If the computer is already connected to the network and does not detect any errors when it is started in safe mode, there may be an error in the NIC, which can be used to discover some hidden problems in safe mode.

3. Secure mode at the command prompt: Start Windows with basic files and drivers and go to the Command Prompt window after startup. Note that the desktop and Start menu will not appear in this mode, and if you accidentally close the DOS window, the shutdown can only open Windows task Manager by pressing "Ctrl+alt+del" and then select from its Shutdown menu or load the new Task Explorer in Task Manager. EXE can appear on the desktop and Start menu, and then it can be shut down like normal mode.

4. Enable startup logging: To boot Windows and log programs to the file (the file name is Ntbtlog.txt, under the Windows XP installation directory Winnt) that is normal to load the system and not load properly, through this log file you can analyze the root cause of the problem when the system starts up.

5. Enable VGA Mode: Use the standard VGA driver to boot windows, and if a new display driver is installed that causes Windows to get an error, you can go to that mode and then remove the wrong driver and install the other drivers. This pattern is often used to solve the problem of system startup abnormality caused by video card driver error.

In fact, the standard VGA driver is used under Safe mode, network security mode, and command prompt safe mode.

6. Last Known Good Configuration: After a system problem (such as a newly added driver and hardware inconsistency may cause the system to not start properly),

Using the last Known Good Configuration to start Windows can generally solve these problems. Of course, if the system file is missing or damaged because of the system problem, it is not resolved (this situation can enter the System Configuration Utility and click "Expand File" to extract the appropriate files to restore).

7. Directory Service Recovery mode: This mode is used to restore the SYSVOL directory and Active Directory (active Directories) service on a domain controller.

It is actually a kind of safe mode.

8. Debug mode: If some hardware uses real-mode drivers (such as some drivers that are loaded in Config.sys and Autoexec.bat) and causes the system to not start properly, you can use debug mode to check for conflicts that occur with real-mode drivers. In this mode, the system tests repeatedly and determines that drivers in Config.sys or Autoexec.bat are to be used or canceled in order to discover device drivers that are causing system configuration problems.
