There are 4 versions of Windows Server 2012 :

Foundation, Essentials, Standard, and Datacenter Data Center editions.

The version of Windows Server 2012 is much less than the version of Windows Server 2008. Microsoft has simplified Windows Server 2012 to 4 versions, which means that server 2012 has no enterprise, high-performance computing, and Web server editions. From a general point of view, there are only two versions: Standard Edition and Data Center Edition. The performance difference between the two editions is that the Standard Edition supports only two virtual machines, while Datacenter Edition supports an unlimited number of virtual machines. The Essentials edition features limited functionality and can only be used by up to 25 users, and the foundation Edition can only be pre-installed through the OEM system and is limited to a maximum of 15 users. This version simplifies the interface, pre-configures the cloud service connection, and does not support virtualization. It is important to note that users can still make high-performance computing available to servers through the HPC Pack 2012 Service Pack. The foundation edition is only available to OEMs, 15-bit user-only, universal server functionality, and virtualization-enabled. The 4 versions of Windows Server 2012 features are shown in table 1-1.

As before, the Standard Edition can support running up to two virtual machines, while Datacenter Edition supports an unlimited number of virtual machines. Because the Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition is functionally identical to Datacenter Edition, it is possible to determine the desired version based on your own virtualization needs, after all, virtualization has become the only difference between these two versions. If you require a highly virtualized environment, Datacenter Edition provides greater flexibility because it provides unrestricted virtualization. If you do not currently have a plan to use a highly virtualized environment, the Standard Edition will meet your needs. That is, if you use Windows Server 2012, but you do not use Hyper-V functionality, the Standard Edition fully meets the needs of your business. If you are building a virtualized datacenter, Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition is the best choice.
