I'm sure you've noticed that when you install Windows 2000, you'll be asked if you want to use the NTFS file format. So what exactly is the NTFS format, and what are its advantages? NTFS, formerly used primarily for Windows NT, provides features that are not available in fat or FAT32 file systems, in addition to all the benefits of the FAT file system:

1, NTFS support file encryption and separate management functions, can provide users with a higher level of security assurances.
2, NTFS has better disk compression performance, can further meet the needs of small hard disk users.
3. NTFS supports a large hard drive up to 2TB, and its performance does not decrease as disk capacity increases.

This shows that the NTFS format has many unique advantages, but it also has a fatal disadvantage, that is, the disk file format can not be other than its own operating system recognized (NT 4.0 is no exception), which has a certain impact on data exchange. Therefore, users who use only Windows 2000 should prefer to use the NTFS format, and users with Windows 2000 and other operating systems should be cautious. It is a good idea to divide the disk into multiple partitions, install Windows 2000 into one of the partitions and choose to use NTFS format, install the other operating system to a different partition, and use FAT or FAT32 format.

As we mentioned earlier, the NTFS file format has the advantage of not being able to match the file formats such as FAT and FAT32, so many users want to convert the original disk system to NTFS format. To this end, we can take the following different approaches:

1. When the user starts to install Windows 2000, the system asks the user to choose the format of the partition in which Windows 2000 is installed, and we simply select the "format disk partition with the NTFS file system" option, which Windows The 2000 installer automatically formats the user-specified disk partition and converts the file to NTFS format.

2, when the user's Windows 2000 has been installed, to convert a disk partition to NTFS, you should back up all the information you need to convert the partition, and then right-click the partition in either the Resource manager or My Computer and select format. Next we should select "NTFS" format in the File System column and choose "Allocation unit size" as needed, whether to use the Quick Format feature, and whether to compress options (select "Allocation unit size" and whether compression is a feature that is unique to NTFS). When you have finished setting up, click the Start button and the system will format the drive selected by the user and convert it to NTFS format.

3, the two methods described earlier need to reformat the hard disk, which is not acceptable to those who keep a large amount of important data on the hard disk! Don't worry, the system specifically provides lossless conversion functionality, we just click Win+r shortcut, open the Windows 2000 Run dialog box, and then in the Open field, enter convert x:/fs:ntfs (where x is the disk partition that the user needs to convert to NTFS format) command , the user-specified disk partition is automatically converted to NTFS format and the data in the disk partition is preserved.

4, the previous introduction of convert although the NTFS format can be a good solution to the problem of lossless translation, but we want to the system of the system disk partition processing (that is, it is not the current Windows 2000 system partition Processing!!! )。 In this case, using the partition magician may be our only option.

Partition Magician is a very good disk partition management software, in addition to the regular disk partitioning function, there is a very important function is to be able to achieve the different disk format lossless conversion, the other partition format lossless conversion to the NTFS format is certainly not a cinch. To do this, we just start the partition magician, then right-click on the disk that needs to be converted to NTFS, and execute "fat to NTFS" or "FAT32 to NTFS" commands from the pop-up shortcut menu "Convert" submenu, quickly, cleanly, and cleanly.
