Use command-line switches to change how Word2007 is opened and how to perform a task. Depending on whether you want to use the given command-line settings permanently, you can use run or use a fully functional Word2007 shortcut.
Of course, you can open a command prompt window and run Word2007 with a DOS style, but this is a bit tedious for most users.
Note that all command-line switches require a space, which is after the specified Word2007 executable file name in the end of the quotation mark, before the backslash (/), for example, Winword.exe "[Space]/a. However, there are no spaces between/and subsequent characters. Also note that when the specified file path or file name itself contains spaces, the entire space must be enclosed in quotation marks.
Tip: Sometimes it takes a certain amount of experimentation to specify the correct command line content. And if you want to save time and effort, you can create a full-featured Windows shortcut for starting Word2007, open the Properties dialog box and make changes to the Target field, and then do not close the Properties dialog box. Click Apply, the dialog box remains open, and the shortcut reflects the changes, and if the changes do not work, go back to the Properties dialog box and try another change, keeping the dialog box open until you have completed the task you want.
/A
The/A switch prevents Word2007 from automatically loading global templates (including Normal.dotm versions) and add-ons. It also prevents Word2007 from loading some of the Word2007 "data" key settings in the registry. When attempting to isolate a Word2007 problem, the/a switch is often used as a diagnostic tool. Therefore, if you add the/a switch to "resolve" all problems encountered, the problem is in the global template or add-in.
Note: Unlike Word2003, the/a switch in Word2007 does not prevent changes to qat, and it does not block the display of files in the recently used documents list when you click office buttons.
When starting Word2007 in Safe mode, the/a switch is not complete or imperfect, because using the/a switch to run Word2007 once is enough to resolve some registry corruption problems, instead, starting in Safe mode Word2007 does not modify the registry.
