Templates can store styles, AutoText entries, AutoCorrect entries, macros, toolbars, custom menu settings, and shortcut keys. Loading a template makes it a common template, so you can use this common template when you use a document that is based on any other template.

Add-ins are supplemental programs that can be installed to extend the functionality of Microsoft Office Word by adding custom commands and specialized features. For example, an add-in program can be a program that is designed and published by a corporate IT department to highlight the company name in a document that is opened on your computer.

Load templates or add-ins

When a template or add-in is loaded, it is loaded only in the current Word session. If you quit and then restart Word, the template or add-in will not be reloaded automatically.

1. Click Office button, and then click Word Options.

2. Click Add-Ins.

3. In the Administration list, select Word add-in, and then click Go.

4. Click the Templates tab.

5. Under Common templates and add-ins, select the check box next to the template or add-in that you want to load.

If the template or add-in you want to load is not in the box, click Add, switch to the folder that contains the template or add-in you want, click the template or add-in that you want, and then click OK.

Unload a template or add-in

To keep the memory and speed Word running, it is a good idea to uninstall infrequently used templates and add-in programs. If you uninstall the template or add-in that is located in the Startup folder, Word unloads the template in the current Word session, but the template is automatically reloaded the next time you start Word. If you uninstall a template or add-in that is located in any other folder, the template or add-in is not available unless you reload it. To remove a template or add-in from Word, you must remove the template or add-in from the templates and Add-ins dialog box.

1. Click Office button, and then click Word Options.

2. Click Add-Ins.

3. In the Administration list, select Word add-in, and then click Go.

4. Click the Templates tab.

5. Do one of the following:

To uninstall a template or add-in, but still leave it under common templates and add-ins, clear the check box next to the item's name.

To uninstall a template or add-in and remove it from the box under common templates and add-ins, click the item in the box, and then click Delete.

Comments

If the selected template is in the Startup folder, the Delete button is not available.

When you uninstall a template or add-in, you do not remove it from your computer-just make it unavailable. The location of the storage template or add-in determines whether it is loaded when you start Word.
