Written after the PHP Global Developer Conference-php Tutorial

The PHP developer conference, which was prepared for more than half a year after the global PHP developer conference, ended last weekend. according to statistics from the backend of the conference, nearly 1000 people signed in to the conference. According to feedback from the circle of friends, it is still quite good, and it can be said that it is beyond our expectations. In fact, since we started preparing for this meeting, many of our friends have been questioning whether it is really useful to attend various technical conferences. We have also seen a lot of technical conferences recently, but there are a lot of goods, it clearly wastes everyone's time and energy. But fortunately, through some innovative methods, this PHP conference did not encounter similar complaints, and the quality of the guests was almost very good.

Since I was afraid to invest in it, I began to plot DevLink with Lao Gao, and to prepare for the PHP Conference. almost only Qi was working full-time, from contacting the venue to confirming tickets, from the coordination of lecturers to the communication agenda, from the implementation of exhibitors to the printing of the exhibition board, almost all of her staff were working with a designer. I and Lao Gao were just working part-time jobs to help us with the corner. After learning about the details, all the lecturers and exhibitors were surprised. Yes, we were surprised.

When the meeting is over, you should always write a summary, which can be used to prepare for a technical meeting or share some experiences with students who want to attend the technical meeting. It seems useless to say too many things, so I want to write some wonderful things.

Reliable outsourcers

The producer system is an innovation of DevLink. Each offline meeting is aimed at only one topic direction or language. as the organizer, it is impossible to be an expert in every field. in this case, how to control the quality of shared topics becomes a task that cannot be completed by ourselves. Therefore, we have invented the producer System. each meeting will invite a producer to help you select topics, design topics, and communicate with lecturers.

Of course, the producer must also be the core developer of PHP 7, laruence. Since the old master bribe a lamb chops, the bird brother has been busy with chicken blood-not because of the lamb chops, the bird brother really wants to pass the activity, discover and train future talents for PHP. In the past few months, laruence is still trying to answer questions in the middle of the night. based on the opinions of laruence, we declined to share a few relatively "water" topics. we can say that, without the assistance of laruence, the quality of this sharing cannot reach this level.

Next, DevLink will hold sharing meetings in different fields. we will also adopt the producer system to find talented people and leaders in the industry to help us select topics and guests, it tries to ensure that each sharing is valuable, meaningful, and helpful.

Dedicated lecturers

Without the efforts of lecturers, it is clear that there will not be any excellent sharing content. Lecturers are both industry experts and technical experts, and their job is busy, but everyone can keep the PHP meeting in mind, no matter how late, we will always stick to our communication topics. Even some lecturers are still modifying their PPT at the last minute before the conference, and strive to provide everyone with a real dry product. In fact, they did.

None of the speeches at this meeting were once mentioned. all the slides were specially prepared by lecturers for this meeting. one of the most lecturers prepared dozens of slides in one breath, almost every PPT has code and examples, which are hard to imagine.

Laruence also specially arranged mutual validation or a hidden combination of different implementation paths. Although this will have a very good sharing effect, the stress on the lecturers is also huge. it is nearly a month before the meeting, many lecturers, such as Han Tianfeng, Lu Yi, and Ye Jinrong, have devoted almost all their spare time to DevLink, which really touched us.

As a result of our efforts, the brilliant speech of the lecturer made everyone unable to leave for half a moment. on the big screen, the audience kept asking for "urine ", this is a strange scene that I have never seen in various meetings.

Method innovation

We made a small innovation at this conference. every participant could reward TA's instructors who think it is reliable. we took out 10% of the vote and directly filled the audience balance, after the balance is used up, you can directly pay for the reward. We insist that good content must receive positive incentives and rewards. Although the lecturers do not earn low incomes, we believe that these rewards may not be enough for the time they spend preparing the content these days, however, rewards are an acknowledgment and encouragement.

After the meeting, in addition to using the balance to reward, each audience paid more than 30 pieces of real money to support the lecturer, although not a lot of money, however, the value of the content has been recognized to a certain extent. it is also a good start and demonstration for instructors to no longer contribute time or even money to participate in various technology sharing for free.

Sharing is not equal to free. The value of sharing must be recognized before we can continue to get more quality content. We hope this positive feedback will always exist and flourish in DevLink.

Special inspirational developers

On the first day of signing in, our volunteers came to me and said they had found a blind friend to attend the meeting. they rushed to see it and found that it was a sunny day for blind programmers from Shandong, I have seen his story in some media, but I was surprised to see him for the first time, especially when I learned that he bought a ticket and took the train to Beijing, in a hurry, greet the volunteers to bring him to the front row and sit down easily.

On the afternoon of the first day, after the sharing, I specially invited this special developer to the stage for a simple impromptu sharing with laruence, there are many contributions and ideas to IT system accessibility and Web accessibility on sunny days. They have also done a lot of solid work, including using PHP to write a lot of programs that can help blind people understand the internet. He called on every developer to pay attention to the accessibility design of the website. The number of blind people in China is 700 ~ 8 million of the scale to serve them well is not only for humanistic care, but also a huge market.

The sharing of blind programmers is no less shocking than the moment when laruence came on stage. If we reference a friend who sent the code to a large screen: if even blind people can write code to tune bugs and do well, what is the reason for us not to work hard?

Low-profile father of PHP

The highlight of this conference was the arrival of Rasmus Lerdorf, the founder of PHP. according to many people, because of Rasmus, they had a job to make a living, so when this God-class character came to the scene, everyone was excited, but the group photo was almost out of the venue. I'm afraid Rasmus was also the first time to see this battle, surprised faces are red.

Rasmus's sharing topic still focuses on PHP7's performance improvement and smooth upgrade skills. although other guests also talked about it on a similar topic, I still feel different when I heard the founder say it. The topic is too professional and cannot provide reliable simultaneous translation at the moment. Therefore, the venue does not provide simultaneous transmission equipment. Fortunately, PHP is a common language and a large amount of code is provided on the PPT, it is enough to let everyone know what Rasmus wants to express.

In the last Q & A session, we were inspired by the low-key and pragmatic nature of the father of PHP, PHP is just a tool to solve the problem. PHP is not a private product but belongs to everyone. thanks to the core developers of PHP 7 for completing such a major version update, each sentence is not proud or arrogant, but modest and cautious. Laruence also explained that the relatively good atmosphere and solid working style of the PHP community today come from Rasmus's low-key and pragmatic personality.

As the organizer, we have prepared a very "Chinese" gift for Rasmus-ask the calligrapher to create a fan for Rasmus, and write a line of big words "PHP is the best language in the world ", although this sentence is a joke, it reflects everyone's mind.

Touching volunteers

Due to the fact that there are not enough people, especially when all aspects of the activity need to be controlled, although the old master mobilized all the colleagues in the company to help, but there is still a shortage of manpower. In desperation, we had to collect volunteers in the group to help with the work. I didn't expect much from my contribution to volunteers, but I hope you can take the lead. But I didn't expect everyone to be really awesome. during the past two days, volunteers have almost no time to sit down and drink water, whether they are responsible for maintaining order on site, signing in, or translating Rasmus, everyone is busy and helps us coordinate various things.

Some of these volunteers arrived by train thousands of miles away, some arrived from Tianjin at three o'clock in the middle of the night, and many local student friends were about to get up in the early morning to arrive at the venue, it was already midnight after I packed up the scene and returned to my place of residence. The two-day work was really hard, but no one was tired and no one was ever lazy. who said it was unreliable after 90?

Disadvantages and disadvantages

There are still many shortcomings and shortcomings. for example, it is difficult to find a place within the budget that meets the requirements in all aspects. the venue arrangement is a little small, and the back of the screen is almost invisible. The air conditioner does not seem to be enough for use. in the case of a large number of people, students in the middle will feel very hot. On the exhibitors side, there are also many shortcomings in exhibition boards and booths. But fortunately, we are very tolerant of us, so we are not discouraged.

We strive to try our best to avoid these problems at the next meeting. some friends mentioned on Weibo that the conference organizer should be at least "tens of thousands of people per person. We don't want to talk about the "crowdfunding" conference. it is inevitable to keep profit. otherwise, isn't our staff willing to pay for it? However, in addition to paying everyone's salary, the lecturer's road fare and accommodation, and the Rasmus ticket hotel and venue fee, the remaining profits are not enough to divide each person into tens of thousands. Otherwise, what will happen to your friend next time?

What to do next

DevLink is clearly not dedicated to the PHP Conference. next we will organize such sharing activities in many segments of development and technology fields. Not only offline activities, but also online activities should be carried out simultaneously. However, no matter what form or language we share, we will follow the following principles to do things:

  • We firmly believe that the content is valuable, and all the shares must be attended (offline) or paid (online) before they can be seen;
  • Let the technical conference return to its original meaning, content quality is the first, and no value is added to the sharing for obtaining sponsorship fees;
  • Affirm the work of lecturers in various forms and pay attention to positive feedback to content creators;

Conclusion

DevLink is a community for front-line developers. whether it is offline or online, we want DevLink to be connected to every developer just like its name. DevLink allows us to communicate with each other equally, share our technical experiences, and continue to grow through DevLink.

DevLink is not a convention and exhibition provider, not a media, but a community. it is a "self-reserved place" dedicated to developers. We recognize the value of content, but it does not mean that profit is a picture, we promote the connection between developers, which does not mean that the business can be pervasive. This is the original intention of DevLink and the expectation of every lecturer and developer.

DevLink is just the beginning, and there is more exciting waiting for everyone. although there are limited manpower, we will spare no effort to speed up this year, strive to establish the utopia of this technician as soon as possible. Success or failure is a real good thing for developers.

Look forward to it.
