In April 1991, Linus Torvalds, a 21-year-old student at the University of Helsinki in Finland, started working on his own operating system. 24 years ago today, August 25, 1991, he published the first announcement of Linux in Usenet's Comp.os.minix newsgroups, announcing the birth of Linux. It is not protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never Would support anything other than at-harddisks, as that ' s all I have :-(. In September of the year, Linux Kernel 0.01 was released to an FTP server (ftp.funet.fi) on the Finnish University and Research Network (funet). There were only 10239 lines of code at that time.
