IBM positions the new direction of its mainframe business growth as cloud computing, analysis, and mobile computing. The latest zBC12 is an upgraded version of IBM's entry-level mainframe z114.

Kelly Ryan, Managing Director and Business Director of IBM System z, explained to the media the configuration of two zBC12 models: H06 has a single central processing module, while H13 is a dual-module, additionally, additional I/O and coupling extensions are provided to increase engine features.

ZBC12 is powered by up to 18 microprocessors with an average processing frequency of 4.2 GHz. Compared with its predecessor zEnterprise 114 (Z114), the memory performance is improved by 36%.

From the processor perspective, zBC12 and zEnterprise EC12 (zEC12) adopt the same microprocessor technology and are adjusted and optimized according to the entry-level mainframe processing requirements. "The core design of this processor combines the newest mainframe design philosophy with the best quality, reflecting the seamless collaboration between IBM's best processor designers," said Ryan. "The New microprocessor chip has a higher frequency super vector-free structure design, improved high-speed cache structure, improved software performance optimization, perfect combination with Java, DB2, and so on ."

Memory:

The IBM zEnterprise server uses a memory configuration called a RAIM Redundant Array (independent memory. "In the storage industry, RAIM is very similar to RAID," said Ryan. "RAIM technology protects dynamic random access memory (DRAM), dual-in-line memory module (DIMM), memory channel level, and provides the most tension-free memory subsystem. According to IBM, zBC12 supports 512 GB of available RAIM protection storage.

Linux:

ZBC12 will provide customers with an IBM Enterprise Linux Server (ELS) platform. Ryan pointed out that ibm els is a platform tailored for Linux workloads, and its lifecycle management costs are cheaper than other Linux platforms.

ELS processes workloads in an efficient and cost-effective manner and improves the running capability. It can share system resources, improve utilization, and provide various IT services. It provides load balancing and efficient system management to help improve service levels and operational efficiency.

Comparing it with IBM's power server is like watching oranges and apples at a height of 1,000 feet. If you have to say something, zBC12's entry point worth $75,000 is really human-friendly. The CPU metrics reach 50 MIPS, And the configuration supports the Z architecture and virtual server environment.
