June 12 is World No Child Labor Day. The theme of "2014 World No Child Labor Day" is: Expand Social Security - Combat Child Labor! In response, the ILO has called for all governments to strengthen the social security system and prevent more children from being forced into forced labor. The ILO emphasizes that social protection policies, which are well designed and that take into account children, can play a huge role in eliminating child labor.
Statistics show that 168 million children worldwide are engaged in child labor. Of these, 85 million are engaged in hazardous work. ILO pointed out that family poverty and income shocks are often catalysts for child labor. Sufficient social security measures such as income, income protection and health care can help families withstand shocks while keeping their children going to school and avoiding child labor. However, from a global perspective, only 12% of unemployed people receive unemployment benefits, 28% of maternity women are entitled to paid maternity leave, and only 52% receive pensions after retirement.
The International Labor Day established the World No Child Labor Day in 2002. The International Labor Organization has designated 2016 as the deadline for eliminating the worst forms of child labor.
Child labor prohibited under international law includes the absolute worst forms of child labor, the internationally proclaimed slavery, trafficking in children, bonded labor and other forms of forced labor, forced child service in armed conflicts, prostitution and pornography, and illegal activities . International law provides that children should not be engaged in work that would impede their education and their full development, or impair their physical, mental or moral health.
The ILO Convention stipulates that the minimum age for work should not be less than the age of completion of compulsory education, usually 15 years. Children 13 to 15 years of age can do easy work as long as they do not threaten their health and safety or interfere with their education or career guidance and training. However, minors under the age of 18 are strictly prohibited from any work that may endanger their physical, mental or mental health, safety or morals.
