The Pew Research Center released a new survey of 20th, showing that American teens send average 50 messages a day to their mobile users. SMS communication over the telephone, online instant chat and face-to-face conversation, and so on, become the most popular way of communication among American teenagers. Each day, 50 of the survey, entitled "Internet and American Life," was jointly completed by the Pew Research Center and the University of Michigan, from June 2009 to September 2009. The respondents included 800 American teenagers ranging from 12 to 17 years of age, and their parents were surveyed. The survey found that 75% of young people owned mobile phones, a figure that rose by 30% from 2004. Among young mobile users, 54% of the people sent at least one SMS a day, 31% send at least 100 messages a day, and 15% send more than 200 messages a day. Each person sent an average of 50 messages a day, of which girls sent an average of 80 messages a day, and boys sent 30 messages a day on average. Two-thirds of teens say they prefer to communicate with their friends by texting rather than on the phone. However, most teens still tend to call when they are in contact with their parents. The results show that 38% of teens use mobile phones at least once a day, 30% use landline phones, and 24% use online instant messaging. Among teens aged 16 to 17, 34% had texting while driving, and 52% had been calling while driving. Cell phone Use the study also investigates whether teens use their phones for other purposes besides calling and texting. For entertainment, 83% of teens use mobile phones to take pictures, 60% use their mobile phones to listen to music, and 46% play video games on their phones. Online, 27% of teens use mobile phones, 23% log on to social networking sites, and 11% use mobile phones to shop online. For parents, mobile phones are an important way to learn about their children's lives. 64% of parents look at information on their children's phones and 48% use mobile phones to monitor their whereabouts. 98% of parents said the main reason for allowing children to use mobile phones was to facilitate contact with their children. 52% of parents limit their children's use of mobile phones every day, and 46% limit their use of mobile phone time. 62% will confiscate mobile phones as a way to punish children. The findings also reveal subtle differences in the way teenagers communicate. For example, a boy usually does not use punctuation when texting, and the subtle differences in the use of punctuation by girls convey very important different information. "If a girl ends up at the end of a text message sent to another girl, it may mean she is in a bad mood," said researcher Scott Cambell, a young man who often uses punctuation in text messages. Amanda Lenghardt, an analyst at the Pew Research Center, who is involved in the study, said: "SMS has become the center of communication in today's teens ' lives, and SMS volumes have soared over the past 18 months." "The U.S. Census Bureau released a group of data last year showing that the US single month SMSDelivery has grown at least 52 times times over the past 6 years, with US mobile subscribers reaching 276 million in 2009. By Lenghardt, texting is cheaper than making a phone call, and texting is more mobile than using a computer chat. In addition, texting is easy to avoid teacher and parental supervision. These factors encourage teens to send text messages in favor. "Teens want to get in touch with their friends at any time and expect them to respond to text messages," Lenghardt said. This is a change in the way teenagers and friends communicate. "The survey found that 87% of teens ' mobile phone users put their phones around when they sleep. This suggests that mobile phones have become a significant part of teenage life, Reuters said. (Liu Yinan)
