Beijing time August 31 morning news, according to foreign media reports, Forrester Research, a recent study shows that only about 4% of Americans have tried some type of mobile phone location services, and only 1% Americans weekly use Foursquare, Loopt or other similar applications.
The findings suggest that 99% of Americans are not interested in sharing their current location via mobile phones. Forrester's findings also show that 80% of users who use these services are men, compared with 70% of people who are more familiar with geographic services, aged 19-25.
At present, most mobile phones support positioning function, including base station positioning, complete GPS, and A-gps function. This creates conditions for the development of mobile phone location services. "Check-in" has become a popular concept, Facebook recently launched a service such as Facebook Places. However, the ability to use this feature does not mean that the user must use the feature.
Industry insiders believe the "check-in" feature is attractive to more than 20-year-olds who want to know what their friends are doing on weekends. Older users, however, often do not want to share information about where they are at a given moment.
The data from Forrester suggest that location-based services will take a long time to be accepted by mainstream users. The biggest challenge is that service providers need to prove to users that the benefits of sharing their location will be more than the loss of privacy exposure. (Chu Yue)
