A U.S. company called I/p Engine has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in a Manhattan federal court in New York, claiming that Microsoft has violated a patent on the company that effectively puts ads on Internet search engines.
I/P Engine said the search technology used by Microsoft was based on the invention of the i/p engine parent company Vringo two employees. The lawsuit says Microsoft's search engine Bing used the technology to generate ads and links to users. Neither Microsoft nor Vringo commented on the news.
In November 2012, the US Virginia State A jury that companies, including Google and AOL, violated the same patent of i/p engine and should compensate the company for $30 million. However, after the i/p engine announced the indictment, its parent company's share price fell 10%. In this case, the company seeks damages of at least 696 million dollars.
In a Thursday filing, i/p Engine said Microsoft had deliberately violated its patents. The US Patent and Trademark Office issued one of the patents to the company in 2003 and rejected Microsoft's similar patent application, the company said. In the case of patent infringement, the amount of compensation will be higher if the infringing party is found to be a deliberate tort.
