In recent years, everyone is arguing about big data. Technical experts are keen on empty talk, but academics hope it will change the way companies solve problems and actually improve people's lives. However, it remains to be seen enough to tap into the business opportunities in the Big data field.

"Big data will save the world, change the way we do business and tell us a lot of things we don't know," they said.

Some of these statements may come true, some may not-but the point is that the hype surrounding "big data" is desperately needed to be dissected. The technology does have a future, but abuse is another story.

Regardless of the actual situation, "big data" is still an emerging area. It is too early for all walks of life to explore business opportunities from their own data centers and the newly Open data treasures of the U.S. government's database. Berkeley Eton, a professor at the University of Berkeley (Darchin De), said that looking at "Google Trends" (Google Trends) found that "big data" was rarely used as a search term until 2011 and was not really popular until 2012.

But Desai said: "I am still a super fan of new technology and I am convinced that there are many technologies that can be used to improve life." ”

Desai made these points at a seminar. The symposium, entitled "Understanding the Big Data", was mainly attended by academics, organized by Constantine Contocosta of the Center for Hints and Progress of the University of New York, and also from Pratt College (the Pratt Cato), expert at the St. Francis College (St. Francis Eton) and the New York Institute of Technology (the NYC Eton of Marvell). It is an integral part of the "Technology Triangle U" (Tech triangle U), a project launched by the Brooklyn Science Triangle (Brooklyn Tech Triangle, New York's Emerging Technology Innovation Center), which aims to forge links between the Brooklyn scientific community and the academic circle.

Each of the experts presented his own views on the impact of large data on their field of study in the future. Cantor is leading a team of architectural information Studies, which focuses on how to use data science to analyze urban energy consumption. He disclosed in advance the results of a number of public data on the implementation of the 84th local Law (84). The bill requires that New York large buildings disclose the use of energy and water, but it only requires the publication of relevant data-and does not require these buildings to change the way energy is used. But he says it does bring two pressures to change these buildings.

The first is competitive pressure, as these buildings will pay close attention to the situation of similar buildings and begin to fight for households based on the efficiency of energy use. "We can use this to compare energy use in different parts of New York and to understand the differences in household energy consumption levels," says Cantor. ”

It means companies like Radiator labs will be expected to open markets. The company's products are based on WLAN work, which solves the problem of uneven steam heating levels in old buildings. They may be interested in the product as benchmark data begins to convince property managers that they have a gap in energy use with similar buildings.

The second type of pressure will come from the top, Cantor Starr said. New York Public utility company Consolidated Edison has been trying to manage peak demand in a new way, by paying large clients during peak hours to voluntarily reduce energy consumption. With more energy use data, large utility companies in the energy benchmark cities may be able to develop better energy-saving strategies. It includes partnering with companies like Energyhub to recruit consumers to volunteer programs, adjust their home air-conditioning to a few degrees through equipment and the Internet at peak energy consumption, or simply power off.

Emily Hollowitz, of the St. Francis College, says it is far from enough to gather a lot of data. Collecting data is a necessary step to better change the status quo, but it is still inadequate. "In my opinion, the biggest problem with big data is that there is too much to see through it," she said. "With big data technology, researchers are finally able to put together a lot of different data for the first time, but that doesn't mean they can reveal anything new," he said. It does reveal relevance-but it is much harder to prove causality.

The experts were Jessi Breden of Pratt College and Jason Montgomery of the City University of New York, but they did not solve the problem when the big numbers and how they were able to produce the distinctive customer service that everyone could feel. Many new technology companies are claiming that more data will bring better services--personalized E-commerce is one of the areas, that is, if you review more products on one of the dealer platforms, the site will produce better recommendations for product improvements-but it's not clear how real this statement is.

However, various providers of data services are demonstrating that they are helping businesses accumulate and take advantage of the data they have collected. At the same time, various data agents are also collecting a staggering amount of information about consumer identity and (roughly) demand.

But the experts agree that details determine success or failure, and that it is one thing to get so much data, and to really understand them and use them well is completely different. Big data may become more prevalent, but efforts are still needed to truly achieve significant success. (Fortune Chinese network)
