Statistics from the Afghan education sector show that the country has a literacy rate of only 26% per cent in 2008. This means that 2/3 of Afghans are illiterate. and children and young people are out of school, about 200,000 of the age of students can not go to normal schools.

Karzai said the Afghan government hopes to raise the literacy rate to 75% in 2020, allowing most students to receive schooling safely.

Called the Taliban "compatriots"

In his speech on 28th, Mr. Karzai spoke in particular about relations with Taliban militants.

He called the Taliban "my compatriots" and wanted them to "stop attacking schools and killing innocent Afghan civilians, not to sabotage their own land and to benefit others".

On the day of Mr. Karzai's speech, a suicide bomber drove a tricycle loaded with explosives into the convoy of Ghazni vice Governor Kazim Arel, causing Arel himself and his son, nephew, bodyguard and two passers-by to die on the spot. The province is located in eastern Afghanistan.
